Engine running on, after turning off ignition

So, the other night I went to see some music. When I arrived and turned off my engine, it continued to run, with the key in the off position for approximately 2-3 minutes. I turned the key on, and off, on and off. Nothing. Shifted into gears to attempt to stall it. That didn't work at first, but I think this is how I turned it off.

This was the first occurrence and happened again when I returned home.

Does this sound like anything you've experienced? Ignition switch?

Thanks

Sounds like the pump ate the fuel shutoff plunger. You can get a new solenoid and plunger cheapest from your local VW dealer, part number is in the FAQ, or just tell them it's for an '85 Golf diesel. To shut the truck down in the meantime, use the emergency shutdown lever on the side of the injection pump.

The shutdown lever is at the bottom center of this pic. Push the lever towards the rear to stop the engine.

When you take out the plunger, look for metal in the plunger cavity. Any shiny flakes and your pump is telling you something!!

Probably not going to find one cheaper than this.

Starter motor

I just had to replace my starter as it would not disengage and I had the same problem, Truck kept running after turned key off. I guess the bendex in the starte would not disengage keeping the truck running until the fuel was gone.

I don't understand what you mean about the starter keeping the truck running? Was the starter mechanically powering the motor somehow? How long did it take for the truck to run out of fuel?
