emissions test today
Well my old truck had its first emissions test today. We've got the snap idle test here in good old Ada County, ID. That's the Boise area for the geographically challenged. So in prep, I spun the AFC pin around to the shallow setting, made sure the smoke screw was backed out and level with the housing, left the full load screw alone at 2 turns, left the star wheel bottomed out (I tried to turn it back to the top but appears to be stuck for some unkown reason), and went out to get my rendition of an "Old Moldy" truck tested. We have to do the snap test, idle to supposedly WFO, five times. Tester guy pokes his head in the cab to peek at the tach, and we go at it. I sorta feather it to about 2400 and let off, producing 34% opacity. I kept playing with the fuel delivery (my foot) until I got it down to 17% with the last attempt. Under 40% passes for my year truck. I'm glad it was me in the seat or it would have failed. SO you guys who haven't done this yet, be aware. I have to admit I was a little suprized. Just thought I'd share.

When I still lived in Colorado, I flunked the last time I took it in. Thankfully, N.C. doesn't have emission testing. I think with biodiesel the exhaust would be much cleaner. Maybe look into something like that for the next test. Rich

Last CO emission test I had was a 29%, and the truck would block out traffic and lights behind me. I was embarrased to floor it, smoked so bad. Still got 22-24mpg.

Judging from what I have read on the subject it would also depend on where the smoke screw is set, seeing that this is the starting point for the AFC. I'm not sure how the fuel screw would effect the test either. I'm glad we don't have to deal with that junk here.

You have to do smog there?! We don't have to smog diesels here in CA, and if any state required smog I think CA would be first. Unless I just don't know about it!

WA state we even have to smog our diesels on a Dyno !!
the snap test should be a breeze if you disconnect your 'enrichment' vacuum line. (to Aneroid)
I've also used a block under the accelerator on TD's with 'enrichment'.
They won't let us run the controls. It is painful to have someone sitting in your cab rev'ing YOUR engine (we used to have snap). Now with dyno test, they are grinding your gears... They always kill my diesel VW's about 4 times, and grind and jam trannie, it is really disgusting to have to watch from our little 'protective' booth... I've written numerous complaints...
They also have to reboot the computer each time, due to not getting a 'tach' signal from cig lighter. Then they need to call a supervisor out of the office to 'override' the RPM requirement. On VW's I have to slow the idle so much that the whole car is radically shaking (as it must be below 700 RPM). It usually takes 45 min to 1 hr to get through the test (and I have 26 Diesel VW's...) Some live at 'boarding school' (non-emission county ) Even my beaters with over 500k miles have never had more than 10% of allowable opacity. It is just another cash machine for the government.
and yes, Bio-Diesel is another way to pass with flying colors.

hey jdwest what emission station do you go to? I live in Meridian and I go to the one at the body shop on fairview just east of main. they can make almost anything pass there. When i had mine tested i hit the throttle so fast the rpm only went up to about 1100 rpms.
