EGTs are aggravating
I still cant get mine under control. Ever since I did the HX35 and the getrag my temps have been high. Before the swap, I couldnt hit 1250. It was real easy to hit 1300-1350 until yesterday. I finally got my 4" downpipe fabbed. Now I can only hit 1250 again, but it still climbs to that faster than I like, and I have to back off when I first hit overdrive to let it cool down, or as long as Im in the throttle at all it stays there. Cruising temps have dropped about 100-150*. I know 1250 isnt TOO bad, but Id like to be able to stay WOT through about 80 or so, so I can take it to the 1/8th. I would add W/M, but Im still trying to get a grip on my boost also, which with the W/G hooked up still runs up to 40 or a hair over. Im just venting...
Guess I just need to start hunting an intercooler or turn the pump down...gotta start hunting an intercooler .

1250 is a good number and been said by many that a cummins can run that all day...anything over that is when you got to start watching how long you stay into it...

yeah those pods are running you hot non I/C I think. I can get over 100mph real quick without even breaking 1000deg. It won't ever go higher.

Well at 1250 I dont want to keep it there for more than 5 seconds. Maybe I can run it longer, but at $1200 for a new engine, why risk it.

One thing POD's run dirty and hot. Try bumping your timming alittle. You'll loose some pounds in boost but also will cool you down alittle on the EGT's.

That sounds like win-win, as I need to drop a little boost and egts. Ill see if I can get my bro to help me bump it tomorrow, been meaning to for a while now.

nah it is real easy, less than 5 min job once you have the tool setups, u or S wrenches from Harbor freight, ratchet strap, and viola

You can run ALL day long at 1250* preturbo per Cummins Engine. It also doesn't hurt to run down the dragstrip with the pyro pegged for 10 seconds either.

That is VERY good to know. Ive been wanting to take it to the strip, but if I stayed in it could hit 1350. Im just a little precautious. Of course, if I ever make it to harbor freight for wrenches and get my bros help Ill have the timing bumped. Quick question on that--if my KSB is unplugged (nonintercooled pump), and the truck is running excellent, should I run the pump all the way to the block? Ive heard the KSB is extreme timing, but is it more than you can acheive with the pump?

Pape CAT what do you need the ratchet strap for when doing the timing bump?. and did you use the s wrench to get at the bolt between the head and the pump? i had fun trying to get at that with the extensions so i havent done the timing bump yet.

actually you're best off getting to the nut between the head and the pump with extentions, you are correct. The s or U wrench is good for the bottom nut around the PS pump. A hookless ratchet strap is an excellent tool for the timing bump, you wrap it around the front valve cover (making sure you aren't on a fuel line) and around the afc top of the pump and it allows you to simply ratchet the pump towards the head (once the three nuts are loose to the timing case and the rear bolt and on the bracket as well - a 10mm bolt) It eliminates the need to have ur buddy reefing the thing over indeterminantly while you retighen one or all ofthe nuts. The strap holds it in place nicely. One thing to be sure to do is make sure the fuel inlet hardline to the pump isn't touching any other lines after the timing bump... I've lost material off mine because of rubbing in this manner. When doing the bump you are effectively repositioning all of the injector lines and preload so just as always look around at the lines and make sure they're routed happily. :-)

Yeah, you can say all you want about running close to the line on EGT's, but after I seen what happened to TritonT's truck, I'm more careful. Ounce of prevention is worth a new cummins engine...
