j-martin~ I recently changed the fluid in the rear, I noticed the spiders were a bit sloppy on the shafts too so I bet the axle is the problem. The funny thing, the truck has been doin real good since I started this thread
93flatbed~ No, the only time I lock the hubs in is when I'm prety sure theres a chance I'll be using 4x4. Not on the highway. I think the front axle spins sometimes while I'm driving, but its always free when I check it.
I have wheel bearings, spindle bearings, and kingpin stuff to put in as soon as I have a chance. I'll see if that helps too.
Thanks a bunch everyone for the ideas, I'v got a good list of things to narrow down now.

What's really fun and exciting is when a transmission or rear end locks up tight at freeway speed.

That would suck! I read something about a bearing in the getrag that could drop and lock it in gear or something too.. Would'nt be no fun.
Im going to recheck the yoke nut on the rear this weekend.

It should be 200 ft. lbs, 375ft lbs is for the first time when you use crush sleeves

No you won't find them anywhere, dana used them to set pinion depth. Shims are used now by driveline shops. You'll need to use a light duty socket to fit down there and torque it to 200-250ft lbs with a hand torque wrench or 175-200 with a impact torque

Whats the oil and play in the transfer case seem like?

10W-30 with some lucas for oil. There is some play, I put this transfercase probably 6 months ago because in 4low I had just front wheel drive sometimes with the original t-case.
Anyways, the truck had the binding problem before I changed the t-case also.

Well should be gear oil but if it were there before...
Earlier in the thread you had said something about there being no heat anywhere when it was binding. If it was in the rear end it would take a long time to show any excessive heat, if it were binding harder then it would heat up faster. Binding that you can feel slowing your truck is friction and friction causes heat.

Are the motor and transmission mounts good? Just a thought, maybe the mounts are allowing lateral movement...Mark

Have you check motor and transmission mounts? Looked for broken springs, shackles etc? Do you have manual lock out hubs? I think the heat gun idea is a great one, test everything that spins or moves. Cheap ones aren't accurate at all but it doesn't matter it will still show you a hotter spot.
gyman98~ Engine and trans mounts are fairly new and look good. I might check the trans mount bolts though. I had it appart a while back because the plate under the trans snapped and I had to weld it. I do have locking hubs which I replaced a couple years ago, the front axle spins freely when parked also. I too like the heat gun idea. Accuracy probably would'nt matter as much in this case, since I just need to find spots that are hotter than others.
I'll jack it up and check everything ya'll listed. Any more ideas, post them up. I'll probably start looking it over this weekend. Thanks
