Does new injection pump = noisier engine??
I have a VERY high mileage 1993 Dodge W350 CTD, 5-spd and 4 Wheel drive. Just did a lot of maintenance, new timing cover gasket, motor mounts and had the injection pump rebuilt. I did it all myself and it was my first time working on a diesel engine. I started the truck up and it runs fine I just noticed it is alot noisier (normal diesel ping) than before? Is this normal? Thanks alot for any help you can provide. Chad

did you engage the locking pin on the side of the pump before you pulled it? also, did you mark the position of the pump in reference to where it sat at the case? then again, what exactly is "VERY high mileage" on your truck? i wouldn't doubt your rings are wearing out and your just hearing the pistons slap the cylinder walls more than they used to.

Well, I understand the concept of how to do it but lets wait for someone with more hands on knowledge. You do it while shut down. Yes turning the pump in the slots does change timing. I do mine by ear. There are guys on here that can explain it much better. Just hang on and you will get your answer.

No sir, I did not engage the lock pin before I pulled it. I pulled it because it becasue the pump had been leaking fuel from the pivot shaft for the last 10 yrs. I got tired of it and pulled the pump. The bosch guys rebuilt the pump and it was locked when I got it from them. I installed it and turned it just a little to make sure the slack was out of the gears and tightened it up. The truck has probably 600,000 miles on it. The engine is still tight, I blew a head gasket about 5 years ago and replace it and the pistons were tight and the cylinders showed no wear. Sorry if I sound stupid about these diesels this is the most I have ever done to one. Thanks alot Chad

You probably just have the pump advanced in the slots further than before. Is the mark on the case and the mark on the pump lined up? Its right at the bolt that is the easiest to get to. When the marks are lined up, thats stock, if you have the top of the pump towards the head more the lines will separate and this is advanced timing and will make more rattle at idle.
