Differences between the 1st gens...

I have an '89, but it seems to be kind of the "forgotten child" of the 1st gens. I was under the assumption (my first mistake) that '89-'93 were pretty much the same. What are some of the differences between the years, such as turbo sizes, injector sizes, the good and the bad? I even heard that the block on the 89's was thicker than later years. I'm just curious to really see what I have.

Thanks,

Eric

I think that the link below has more than I can tell you. Excellent reading, it is where I started off when I got My first diesel. Very good info!

The difference to be most concerned with is the lack of intercooler. Not only because we don't have one, but because ourcore supports were not designed with one in mind, so there's some fabbing involved when you eventually want one, which you will. Beyond that, we early first genners are not encumbered with silly things like a PCM to control alternator function and other menial tasks that still seem to work just fine on our old rigs. It seems that the later first gens ride smother, too. We also have a larger injector bore cast into the cylinder head. This is good because our stock injectors flow more than the later intercooled models. This is bad because the larger bore means less meat at the valve seats, so our heads tend to crack under stress more frequently than the later heads with the smaller bores. This is also why we need sleeves on the injector tips when running POD's etc.

I can't remember where I read this, and don't know that it's true, but I thought the frames were made heavier in 93. Can anyone confirm or deny this? It doesn't really make sense for Dodge to make a change for the last year of 1st gen....

I have also heard that the 1 ton came equipped with a larger Turbo Compressor than the 3/4 ton, im not sure if its all 350 models, or not. I saw that on www.htturbo.com
