Diesel Virgin, just bought 1990 w250

hey guys,

I just purchased a 1990 w250 diesel, 4x4 long bed, automatic (?727 its a 3speed) with 123k on the clock. I must say I know nothing about diesel's. It runs sweet and was used by an 80 year old guy as a plow truck. It is 100% stock. It needs an exhaust and I was considering the Flomax 3.5inch setup from Summit, also maybe a K+N filter, what would you all reccomend?? I have also looked into the bully dog fuel pin upgrade, they claim 40hp, ist it worth it? Do I need to do anything else with the fuel pin to ensure the truck will run safely? Would the bully dog fuel injectors be better the the fuel pin? Are the any good instructions on how to adjust the VE (??) pump for more power.

What should I do as regular maintenance to this thing, I was thinking service the trans with filter and fluid, the rearend leaks so I need to change the seal and pumpkin gasket.

Any help would be awesome, I cant wait to start toying around with this thing to see how much of a beast it is.
Thanks in advance
Nick

Welcome to DTR! Yes, they can be a real beast once you start down the slippery slope. But the stock answer to your questions usually revolve around gauges as the first adviseable mod. Boost, pyro and in you're case tranny temp to start with. That way, you know where you're at initially so you can monitor things as you start to add fuel and avoid/diagnose problems with high EGT and other issues that crop up.

thanks, when installing the EGT gauge does the turbo have to be removed? Is there any pics or instructions for doing this and the Boost gauge?

If I still lived in Brunswick I would tell you to drive down and I would help you crank out some free power.

You dont have to remove the turbo, but you do want to use grease on the drill bit and tap though, and maybe a shop vack to suck out any shavings that may drop in.

I just ordered my Jardine Exaust, I was going to order it a month ago but thy said they were having fit problems with the 1st gen 4x4 auto. I got a call from the last week and they got a truck to fit test and got all bug worked out. I haven't recieved it yet but I must say that there responce and promt answers are great. It's going to cost $290 shipped and thats the best deal I could find. Do a serch on Ebay for pinnical performance 4" dodge exaust. As far as your guage and perf. ? click on the "STICKY" at the top of the page and almost all your fix and upgrade ?'s can be answered there. This is a great forum to be a part of and there is no one here that won't answer any ? you have so don't be afraid to ask. Check here before you spend money for the best suggestion on parts and location. WELCOME TO DTR it's addicting in a GREAT way. Ryan

Many or most(?) would recommend the BHAF instead of the K&N. The 3200 spring should be available from any Bosch dealer. A search should give you the part number.

Very large dry element paper filter. Works very well with an Outerwears cover to keep the moisture and the big chunks out. Search BHAF for part numbers.
