Desired 1st gen?
#17
I have all of em, there are pluses and minus. I've put over 100,000 miles on my 1989 D250, 40K with the original 727 and 60K on the getrag! I've put 10K on my 1993 W250 Club cab 5sp... And I've put about 1 mile on my 1972 Crew cab Short box! I like them all!
The 1993 is for long travel trips with wife, very nice, quiet, smooth, dependable as a rock, nice interior. Most people have a 2nd or 3rd gen for these purposes though. I prefer the 1st gen. the 1993 is the last and only truck for me for a long time to come.
the 1989 was a commuter/tow rig/do it all fuel miser with the 5sp/3.07. the non i/c motor is an industrial beast! never let me down... easy to work on like all the above.
the 1990 and 1991.0 are donors... didn't drive them. But the drivetrains were both solid even though they had 400K/250K as construction company rigs respectively!!!
the 1972 w200 crew well... it is on 37" tires with no lift at all. Still a work in progress but a beast nonetheless. Something to take up trails into the mountains far from civilization with a few friends in the cab with plenty of room for gear in the back... Not nice like the 1993 nice but stout and won't be afraid to give it some new pin striping from bushes and brush... In 5 years or so when the family is growing I want to do a full restoration on this rig to make it as nice as new for a family hauler...

Give me a '93 W-350 club cab dually LE 5 speed with bucket seats, in my favorite color combo-burgundy and champagne 2 tone (the one with the primary color on top and bottom and secondary in the middle) with burgundy as the primary. Oh yeah and it needs a tan interior and a price of about $1500 in mint condition with under 100k on the clock. And then I woke up, LOL. But seriously, just buy what you want, don't listen to any of us, just get what makes you happy.

just from my own expierience I have had ALOT of problems with the Auto tranny. It cant hold any extra power and the electronics for the O/D are terrible and prone to problems. I regret not getting a manual So far i have replaced the PCM, CPS, VSS, TPS & using a Potentimeter and I still have no O/D. It only works with a manual toggle swtich

Sounds like a '93 is pretty good. I'm looking into a 1st and 2nd gen. I like the 2nd gen ones due to the fact they seem to be more popular and looks like I could find TONS of body parts. lol

A couple more reasons for buying a 1st gen., solid axle Dana 60 with locking hubs, none of that central axle disconnect garbage or non serviceable wheel bearings, leaf springs at all 4 corners as long as it's 4x4, the whole engine is accessible not half covered by the cowl/dash. The last of the "trucks" IMO.
I was looking for a single wheel auto, wound up with a dually manual.

Definely the one everyone is after is a 92-93 Club Cab 4x4 w/5 speed... Even an auto one.. Its just so hard to find a clean club cab 4x4 .
My personal favorite is a 91.5 W250 4x4 5spd ... No power windows...no a/c....rubber mat and 3.54 gears...i'll find it one day.

Tough as nails, Cheap to mod, Good looking front end, A few other improvements in 91 as well. over the 89-90.
I like the truck that is in my car-port but I have a feeling it'll never get done!

i dont belive in that hole frame issue, now if i was puttin 2000lbs of john deere suit case weights then yes the frame might have an issue, but i load it every day and its not a problem yet, a non ic truck that has been ic runs pretty strong, but i hate power windows and crusie control, ac and all that stuff that takes another fuse and never works right, just a place to collect more dirt. i do like the warn hubs instead of the slectomatics that break when the tire falls on it.
