D70 rear pinion leak...

How hard is it and what tools do i need to change the seals. Does anyone know how to do it? I know its pretty easy. When I normally deal with axles I am swapping them, not opening them.

Before you mess with changing any seals, remove and thoroughly inspect/clean the rear-axle vent.

99% of leaking pinion-seals are directly caused by clogged vents.

Usually, cleaning the vent will stop the leak, unless it is a gusher.

To replace a pinion-seal, drop the drive-shaft, big 3/4-drive socket on the big pinion-yoke nut, remove the nut, pry off the seal, drive on the new seal, put it all back together.

You are not supposed to re-use pinion-nuts, or any yoke-nut for that matter, but I sort of crimp the out-board threads of the nut to re-create the lost self-locking characteristics.

Having a yoke-nut come off at speed is not a good thing.

I takes an 1-5/16" socket. When you put it back together the torque value is like 280 ft/lbs. I wouldn't worry about torquing it just get it "goodntite" with a 3/4racket.

Like BK said, dimple the outer rim of the nut so it grips the threads.
