d350 Dually to SRW conversion question

I've done a search and read all the threads I could find but can't quite find what I'm looking for.

Can I simply run my dually (it's a 2wd) as a SRW by unbolting the outer two wheels from the rear?

I'm thinking about the budget conversion route of unbolting the flairs, removing the outer two wheels from the rear and calling it a day.

My understanding is that the rear wells are cut a bit higher so it might look a little funny. Is that all I have to worry about?

No flares means I could fit it in the garage next to the wife's car instead of parking out on the driveway. Easier turning, parking, a bit better mpg and not having all the unsprung weight of the two extra wheels/tires along with the extra cost of 6 tires all sounds pretty good to a guy who never tows.

Am I missing something here?

Not positive but I think the axel is longer than a SRW so it will stick out the sides of the truck. Might look like it has kneecappers on it.

the back fender well's are cut at a wierd shape if you pull the fender you will see how they look I would see if you can find maybe a wide 1 ton wheel so it won't look so bad maybe .

Run 3rd Gen wheels with an old late '70s 9,000# SRW lugnut.
The 3rd gen wheels have a LOT of backspacing and from what I understand, they fit pretty nicely on a stock dually 1st gen, plus you can get some pretty nice 17s on there.

Mark.

Downside to new wheels would be that I have six brand spankin' new tires on it currently so it would kind of defeat the purpose a bit if I spend a chunk of change for the conversion at this point.

I'm tempted to do the unbolting and run it for a week to see how it goes/looks. Any weird tracking or handling issues I should be worried about with just running singles on the back?

I have an 89 dually I pulled the 4 stock wheels and put ford steel wheels on. Had to search for the right lug nuts and be patient when installing them. But doesn't look too terrible and I gained about 2mpgs. Also took off a flat bed and put on a regular SRW bed helped with ride considerably too.Can get pics on monday if your interested.

Do you mean the 3rd gen dually wheels? I've always wondered if they'd fit and how they'd look on a 1st gen. Obviously the studs would have to be changed out or the holes in the wheels opened up to 5/8".

I just had the rear hubs off of a 90 SRW and for giggles I thought I would see if the DRW hubs would fit. The hubs fit and it looks to me that the axles are the same length just the flange on the hub is farther out on the SRW. So if you want a SRW truck find hubs from a SRW donor and change them out. Take the spacers out of the front and use the smaller SWR studs. Then use some 3/4 ton rims. Not sure about the fenders. My trucks are all flat beds.(The hubs fit but the inner bearings are smaller on the SRW)

I'm definitely interested to see what it ended up looking like. Pics would be great!
