Coupla dumb q's . ..

Driving my donor truck, just so I know what to expect before I start the swap and don't panic about some noise or vibe that I'm not used to . . . .

1. When I fire up the truck, the oil pressure light stays on for several seconds after it fires and is running. Is this normal, or should I be worried? Oil level is fine, and the truck starts in half a crank. Happens almost every time I start it, not just when it's been sitting overnight.

Can't remember my second question, will post up later if I do . . .

Check the pressures with a mechanical oil pressure guage. An inexpensive one will do fine. You should have 10psi at idle, 30 at rated speed. the light comes on at 8psi. My light does not stay on long 1-2 sec.

Thats normal the light just tells you that oil pressure is low. When the engine first starts the oil pressure will be low until the oil pump has pushed enough oil to bearings etc. to have some resistance to flow which creates pressure and cause your light to go out.

OK, must be that the pressure sensor is farther from the pump than on Chebby's . . .

The oil light stays on for about 7-10 seconds on my 93 before it builds enough pressure to shut it off, seem to recall my 91's being the same way

My oil pressure gage takes about 15 seconds to run up to operating pressure. I sit and listen to the engine quieten down as pressure builds.

That's good to hear, sounds like I don't need to worry. Mine takes 4-6 seconds for the light to go off, i.e. before the needle on the gauge starts moving up . . .

Second one--how much do I need to worry about the KDP? Should I not be driving it until I've done the fix? the truck has about 130K on it, but it's got 4.10 gears too . . .

you may want to look into locking up them timing gear bolts, and the kdp isnt as big as a problem as it is on a p pump but if you get the chance it would be good to do.

It sure can be! And the timing case bolts need to be checked anyway.

Why would it be less of a problem on a ve pumped engine? Timing case bolts, timing gear bolts . . . . loctite? I should do some more reading

The case is a little different than on a p-pumped engine. The 1st gens don't drop the KDP as often, but it DOES happen. The case bolts are a bigger worry though, because one of them is pretty much guaranteed to break the cam.
