Aftermarket cruise control kits could probably still be had. My 91.5 D350 Getrag came without cruise; I installed a kit. To get the signal for speed sensing I just had to add two disc magnets at the #1 u-joint and affix a telephone pickup coil(the type you'd find at Radio Shack with a 500-ohm coil on a suction cup) in close proximity. Worked great. You might be able to modify this idea to use with the existing control. Play around with it a bit, I doubt you are gonna hurt it!
