Converting an Automatic to NV4500

Well, I still haven't done anything to my poor truck after my transmission mishap of last weekend. The truck is up and running (the TV cable came off) but I don't know how much damage I might have done to bands and clutches.

The cool DTT transmission I was pricing out to get built is right around $3500. Since I'm a reluctant automatic owner (the truck was a good deal and available when I needed a truck) I decided to look around at NV4500 conversion options. For about the same price as the DTT(and a little more time), I could get this package deal for a conversion kit from an automatic to an NV4500:

http://www.high-impact.net/transmiss...88-03_auto.htm

Anyone know anything about this outfit? Anyone done this conversion? Anyone have any idea how many hours a conversion might take? (I'm under a bit of a time constraint.) Seems pretty straight-forward accept for locating a pedal assembly and installing the assembly. I can't think of anyother bug-a-boos.

Thanks again for y'alls thoughts and opines.

I did this conversion about a year ago. It is quite expensive but if you are determined to go to a 5spd its not difficult. If you can find a getrag doner truck it will solve all the parts problems. You will need the getrag bell housing for all the internal parts, shift fork and ball stud etc.. also you will need the driveshafts and the transfer case. The automatic is 6 inches longer than the nv and the output shaft on the auto is different. You can get a bellhousing from advance adapters that will use the first gen clutch and clutch master and slave setup. The entire job took only 1 1/2 days in my own garage.

Thanks for the info. My truck is a 2wd so I don't have some of the issues you speak of. The kit I found claims to have ALL of the parts except the pedal assembly. I'd have to get the drive shaft worked on off course.

looks like the kit comes with every thing you need and at a really good price.
your truck is two wheel drive you don't have to worry about the transfer case
and to get everything you need in one place it's worth it not to have to hunt down all the parts yourself.my 6 speed cost me $2500 by itself.

Check out www.drivetrain.com
They have a conversion kit for $2300 that looks like it includes most everything.

With both of the above options, you add around $500 for a basic clutch and $500 core charge (since I don't have a core) and you come up with the same price almost of $3400 minus a few parts that the High Impact people include. Both of those conversions only for if you're starting with a Getrag. The High Impact kit includes master and slave cylinders, clutch fork, pivot, bearing, flywheel, clutch, and plumping.

I spoke with Greg Miller at High Impact this morning. Very nice guy. I'm encouraged about this conversion, although I really don't have the bucks to spend. I'm still giving it some serious thought.

I didn't realize that, so the high impact kit is a pretty good deal then, there transmission also has the 5th gear fix.
