Considering parting out an 89...engine worth, best way..?
Hey guys,
So, I might have a parts truck here soon that I'll be taking the tranny and such out of.
Most of it, I know, will get scrapped. But the engine is supposedly a great runner with only 150k on the clock.
How would you folks recommend I unload that engine, and for how much? I'd like to recoup some of the cost by selling the engine, but not sure about the best way to do it.
Should I leave it in the truck so potential buyers can see it run? Should I take video and yank it? Assuming I do sell the thing, how the heck do I even get it to whoever buys it...dang things weigh like five million pounds, don't they? ;-)
Anyway, just curious...I'm sure some of you folks have experience in just this type of scenario.

a good running 89 engine with 150k should be worth $1200.
leave it in the truck and sell the truck whole with the engine in it, good D70 and D60 axles and whatever else. Sell the whole thing for a little more than what you want for the engine....
or advertise the engine for $1000 and say they have to pull it out in your driveway.....(been there done that)

The last 1989 engine that I bought came from a local autowrecker who I found on the internet. The engine came from a perfect 2WD automatic truck, garage kept, with 50K miles that was hit hard on the left front fender. The truck actually belonged to a friend of the owner of the yard. The engine actually has 90% of the original black paint. I have a bill of sale to prove the engine was purchased for $1250+tax and delivered free from 30 miles away. I found the yard on car-part.com

Well i don't think mileage matters that much with a cummins. It only has 150k anyone who's swapping isn't gonna care. its when they get over 250k when people start to turn away.
Subliminal, pull it out if you can, power wash it and make it look good and clean in pictures and you should get $1200 for it. theres a bunch of 12v's in PEICES on craigslist the people want like $1500 for.

Thanks guys,
I'm a little...concerned...about how I'd even get the thing out of there, which was the reason for my inquiry into how it's done. The thing is a monster, and I just a mortal man.
Not trying to sell anything here, Wanna, just trying to figure out how to even go about parting such massive parts.

Right. Well, I guess that is an option. Of course, it won't have a transfer case, a transmission, driveshafts, crossmembers, pedals, clutch and a few other pretty important parts. Or a floor, really, since that is just rubber covering a hole where metal used to be. And the doors are pretty much rusted through for the bottom six inches. The seat is shot, the tires are done. Other than that, it might just make someone a good truck.
