Clear coating wheels

Hey there 1st genners,

I am looking at buying some 3rd gen wheels. I have a pair lined up but they are not clear coated. They were but it started to peel so they stripped them down and buffed them up real nice they look great.

Anyways does anyone have any experience with clear coating wheels. I researched a little bit and it seems easy for someone to do just have to get the right stuff or find someone to do it. Thanks and any input is greatly appreciated.

-Kyle

Maybe just recoat them if they are already buffed? This outfit sells some pretty good clear coatings:

I used Rustoleum "Crystal Clear Enamel" on some aluminum rims on my Chevy and they still look great after two years of Nebraska winters. Got the paint at my local Home Depot. Took two cans for four wheels. The rims were so corroded that I ended having to sand blast them to get them clean. The sand blasting changed the color of the aluminum and the final product looked a lot like shinny gray primer rather than polished aluminum. But anything was better than what I had and total price was like $10 for paint.

Since they are not coated and they buffed them it's basicly like having polished wheels, sort of high maintence you'll have to polish them yourself. The clear coat goes over the polished metal and it basicly stays like that forever and low maintence.

A wheel shop will tell you that Aluminum wheels that have been polished can't be clear coated because the compound is down inside the pores but i'm not sure how much truth is in this.

Thanks Yorel I will look into more kinds of spray on clear coat i think i am going to talk to a local guy that might be able to spray them.

Brandon, I am hoping that i can still get them clear coated i never thought about the whole compound thing being in the pores and all. I am just sick of polishing aluminum wheels lol i guess thats life.

My question is: the clear coat is it the same as a clear coat on a vehicles paint or is it different? I dont know.

Thanks for the info guys i appreciate it.
