can a 7100 pump be installed on 1 st gen?

Just wondered if a 2 nd gen pump could be installed in 1 st gen. Even if a new PCM was needed. A buddy had one go bad and likes my old 95 with a #6 TST plate. Can you get the same (or near same) power and mileage with old pump?

Yes it can, all you need is some $$$$ No need for a new PCM either...

Pcm doesn't have anything to do with how a mechanically injected Cummins operates, as far as I know. The short list is injectors, injector lines, p-pump, p-pump gear, p-pump timing case ($$$), p-pump timing cover, associated p-pump support brackets, as it's much heavier than the VE. P-pumped trucks get some good mileage, too. They are, sadly, stuck with fixed timing, unlike the VE

It might be easier to swap in a motor already setup with a p-pump.

Yeah, I was just adding up some rough #'s in my head (because I have no life...) and it'd be cheaper to buy a p-pumped core off e-bay, take what you need and part the rest of the core out--might stand a chance to break even!

G1625S is correct, but the 12V (P) pump timing can be changed however it is more involved than the VE pump....

I think what G1625S is saying is that a P-pump doesn't have any dynamic timing, meaning that it is fixed at what it is set at. Yes changing it is more involved. The VE on the other hand has timing advance mechanism that advances the timing as engine rpm's increase. The mighty P-pump lacks this feature.

Price is what you make it....its all relative. The best and easiest thing to do is get a core...like mentioned before....take what you need and find someone that needs a 12V Long Block.......that would be by far the easiest......i would est anywhere from $1000-5000 depending on how lucky you are......BUT, and have seen this done, just swap in the newer 12V.....would take some of the hastle out...and you can get some $$$$$ out of your motor.........

And the lack of timing advance on the P-Pump is the only reason that my VP will stay in my truck (Plus i dont need an all out race truck).....Its like a Carb compaired to Fuel Injection in gas terms......You can set the carb to DUMP the fuel....but that is all you get untill you mess with it.....FI you can tune on the fly....
