Can a 2wd getrag be converted to 4wd?

Title says it all folks. Just wondering if you can replace the main shaft and tailshaft to make the tranny work in a 4wd?

The gears are turning, especially after tearing up my 2nd new set of rear tires, "see previous, I HATE 2WD THREADS" Yep thats right, bought the truck in Sept, replaced the rear tires, 10 ply Coopers, tore them up, installed another set of ST-C Commercial Duty 10 ply Coopers, and tore them up, so Ill soon be on my 3rd new set of rear tires in under a year.

I WANT 4WD!!

But I know my drivetrain and wouldnt mind a winter project.

The transmisssions should be the same, with different tail-housings.

If you can find a 4x4 Getrag for parts, they should swap.

Well actually both times were outa frustration.

Most recently I was towing a 1940's dual wheeled Dodge Dump Truck outa a wooded area, down a slight hill. The position of the dump, reqd me to drag my trailer sideways with the winch to get between a tree and the dump, that was no problem.

Get loaded, and start cranking on the wheel to get the trailer back around the tree. I couldnt turn it enough. Tried winching he whole assy sideways back straight, and looked like I was gonna snap a trailer axle, so I quit that(winch was up to the job, no sweat)

Anyways after some time of back and forth I decided to just see if the trailer fender would move the whole assy around the tree(they are very heavy duty fenders, and tapered at the front) which it did, and never bent a fender, when I got home though I noticed the tires were all tore up. Too bad I was 10 miles back in the middle of no where-nothing but camps and woods, and no one else around.

If I could have backed up, it wouldnt have been a problem at all.

The 1st time happened after loading a 3000 gal Oil tank (aprox 5' diameter, 25' long) on my trailer and started back up the dirt road where I was at. It spun all the way to the top of a decent grade hill, and when I got home realized I didnt have a center left in the RR tire, it had removed all tread down to the belts.

I will not, I repeat will not ever buy another 2wd truck. But I do like everything else about my truck, and have access to a few 4wd doner trucks, that I can swap my drivetrain into.
