calling all turbo experts!!

alright i got this used turbo from work for free.
im guessing it needs a rebuild as you can see the oil residue in the first pic. the impeller wheel is 93mm. the intake right at the impeller is 2.65" dont know the exaust housing size but it is big. will get a better pic of that if needed. is it any good or should i just pitch it? if its good could it be used in a twin setup? can you rebuild them yourself? how much would a shop charge to get it done? ideas and sugestions please

You can DL the service manual in PDF format from the Holset website. The last time I checked the rebuild kit was around $70. You'll need a in/lb torque wrench and metric sockets of course. A good dial indicator will tell you a lot about the condition of the shaft. An 0-1 inch micrometeris a good thing to have around anyway but dial calipers will work too. They're really not as mysterious as a lot of people make them out to be.

There is a groove in the shaft near the turbine wheel which holds an expansion ring to seal off exhaust gas. If the groove gets to wide you'll need a thicker ring for it. Not sure about the availability of those.

Be sure the oil return pipe isn't obstructed. That will make them pump oil.

if the oil return line is pluged. how do i tell if it needs a rebuild? i checked the play and there is a little bit but not enough to make the impeller blades rub.

since it seems to be a good find what is the likely hood of using it in a twin setup with my pdrHX35? or a big single with a smaller housing?

2.65" = 67.31 mm It sounds a little too small for a bottom turbo for twins, but it COULD be used as a single I suppose. It would probably be a good pulling turbo, but it will probably take a while to spool. I guess there's only one way to really know-- try it!

Might try calling HTT or some other turbo and or diesel shop. See what they think. They maybe able to go through it, change the turbine wheel and or exhaust housing to something more suitable for your truck. I'd like to know if its old technology or a recent technology turbo.

Use it as a core swap for a rebuilt that is more to your liking.

way too small for twins. and probably make a better conversation piece than a single turbo. you'll dig something up. and if you're serious, keep in mind that a brand new 3b is less than $500.
