Phillip i never could get my 18's to burn clean at an idle, even with the 12mm pump. My 16's are really close to being clean in the summer time but if you step away from the truck and loookk reallly close you can still see it. Its the nature of the beast in my mind.

Mine was pushed to the head before I jumped a tooth. When I jumped a tooth, I put a timing tool in the pump so I would know where to start. That turned out to be the stock timing marks, they were almost perfectly aligned. I'm now about 1/16" past there, it sounded spooky at 1/8, and past there it would surge under light throttle at highway speed.

Sites that sell VW diesel parts usually have good prices on the timing tool kits. You use it by checking plunger lift @ TDC on #1.

When I jumped my timing gear a tooth, I put the truck on #1 TDC and installed the timing tool and wrote down the reading on the dial indicator. Then I jumped the gear a tooth and moved the injection pump until the dial indicator read the same as before (so the timing was the same). That just happened to make the stock timing marks line up. Then I bumped it about 1/4" and strapped it to the dyno. I wound up backing it off some later due to driveability issues and because it just sounded scary to me.

No, I just did it that way so I'd have a known point to go back to if I didn't like it.

Yes, the gear goes clockwise (as viewed from in front of the truck) one tooth.

No, either the pin is broke or stuck.
