Does it have to be on fuel only? It's a lot easier to get to 500 HP with drugs, there are less than 5 VE pumped 500 HP #2 only trucks out there.

If you want that kind of power, you can't be concerned about your budget. If you are worried about your budget, settle for somewhere between 350 and 400 HP.

Keep in mind that a VE'd engine making 350hp can be close to 1000 ft-lbs torque, unlike the latter engines that make 600-750ft-lbs with 350hp. That will make it seem like it has more power, when it is just at a lower RPM.

That said, I'd say 350-400 is about it, while maintaining reliability and longeivty of the VE pump with the stock H&R. But, that may shoot your budget to heck- you'll need injectors, then turbo/ exhaust, and supply side upgrades.

the stock sachs clutch will hold around 400hp as long as you're good with it and don't slip it.

the clutch for me has outlasted 5 trannies. as far as the getrag goes, i would not recomend doing any boosted lauches or your going to either blow a pocket bearing or countershaft bearings, as far as im conserned, its ineveitable, they will go out soon or later. so yes on the clutch, no on the tranny.

I made 301 with an intake, exhaust, 60mm turbo upgrade, DDP4 injectors, and a Goerend non-lockup converter, but I am a magazine guy so you can't believe me

500 hp is a tough hill to climb, ask anyone who's gotten there.

edit: don't worry about an aftermarket cam at this point, that's for gas stuff.

To answer your question about budget friendly, you will probably get hooked and spend all of your leftover money on torque/hp. lol I got sucked in, but I'm on a college budget. ($0) lol

Its much cheaper if ur friend doesnt own a diesel shop I found out.

Dont bring it in for a better tq converter - the motor has to be pulled out to replace it properly.

Now im thinking P pump might be kinda cool

He's joking. When he went to replace his converter (at his friends shop, I'm assuming) he ended up pulling the engine and doing a lot of other things.

The converter was supposed to be a weekend project. I pulled the trans and the fluid was getting dark - it wasnt when I bought the truck a few months prior. I hurt the servo and band for 3rd. Had the trans mod'd for future use.

I bought a camshaft and was gonna stick it in a year or so when I would get to porting the head.

I got talked into pulling the engine to put the camshaft in. It would be much easier since the trans was out- NOT

Bad part of the story:

I work in a speed shop...

I pulled the head to do a head gasket - easy since its on the stand.... ended up porting the snot outta the head, 3 angle valve job.
I balanced the injectors...

Pulled out the cam and found out the cam I bought wasnt big enough - so I got a bigger one

Then it happened - Ya know you wanna pull the bottom end and balance it... Well yes .... So the bottom end came appart.

I polished the beams on the rods, new rod bolts, some bearings etc etc etc and balanced it all.

I was close to getting it almost being put in the truck and decided my gds 60mm 16 cm turbo was too small. Bought a super 40 to replace it.

Truck runs beyond great now. Still needs a big set of injectors and intercooled a 47rh etc etc and traction

Your right 440forpower. You never know about some diesel shops!
