bottom end rebuild

any recommendations on what bearings to use for mains and rods? i have a slight knock and i have the time to take the engine out and rebuild it. i have heard these blocks are pretty strong so i might be able to get away with just honing the block and putting new rings in.

any help would be great. do you guys just RTV your oil pans or use real gaskets?

If you have a Fleet Pride near you, go through them for the oil pan gasket, and mains. I just helped my best friend do his, we got Federal Mogul mains and pan gasket. The stock Cummins thrust washer/main bearing on number 4 is 3 piece and often fails in a manual truck. (just the thrust washer part falls off into the pan) Cummins was supposed to have changed this in the mid 90's, but a 96 still had this design. The Fed's are one piece machined.

YOu sure the knock is the bottom end? I had a '93 that broke the flexplate and it sounded like a rod knocking.

What Marc said on the knock, make sure it's not something else first.

If it starts easy and has a normal amount of blowby, just roll new bearings in and call it good. Most of these motors still have visible crosshatching in the bores at 350k, there's no sense in messing with the pistons and rings when they have just barely got seated good...
