I did mine last winter--easiest straight axle I've ever done. Everything is so big it's easy to get at. A little encouragement with a dead-blow hammer and the spindles came right off.

I was surprised how easy the spindle came out as well. Usually on a lowly D44 you have to beat the tar out of it to get it out. But then they have 3/8 bolts versus the 1/2 on a D60 and a much smaller bolt circle to boot.

so i did the driver side this evening it went well when i removed the spindle i noticed someone had cotted the mating surface with antiseize it pulled rite off with ease the inner needle bearings were shot "the ones supporting the axle" i already figured that cause of all the play in axle while my wheels straight, now its nice and tight. i didn't replace the inner axle seal, ill do it in a few days. tomorrow im doing the pass. side thanks yall for all your info. im using the presicion bearing 374 for the u-joints, and SBK-3 federal mogul bearings for the spindle support bearings. it all seems pretty easy and straight forward. the only prob. i encountered was the spindle bearing on removal i wasnt able to knock it out with a screw driver from the opposite side so i ripped out the remaining needle bearings that weren't dust, and scored the inside of the retainer "or race" with a dremel cutoff tool to weaken it so i could sneak a chisel under it, in turn buckling the housing enough to pull it out without damaging the spindle."pain in the butt!"

I Bought all the stuff to do my axle joints but could not get the spindle off last year. They were good so i gave up and they are still sitting on the shelf. Maybe I'll try again in the spring.

clips for the axle ujoint are on the inside of the bearing caps. Use a socket and a dead blow to push the caps out while on a vice. Do some rock crawling and you will learn how to replace one in about 90 seconds.
Inner axle seals are replaced from the inside of the housing while the carrier is out.

if it dont leak run it. you may have a little drip at first from oil that came out after the shaft was removed and is just now running out but give it a few days and see if it stops if so then the seal is fine. but like apwatson50 said you have to have the safts out to do the seal.
