Bigger Fuel Filter Question

I was reading in the "stickies" about a longer fuel filter that fits our engines.

Fleetgaurd # FS 1221 or Donaldson # P550688

It doesn't give a Hastings/Baldwin number.

I understand that these filters do away with the WIF sensor.

Does this mean that they have no big threaded hole in the bottom, i.e.solid bottom??

Are they water seperator/fuel filters, or just fuel filters??

Is anyone using them; and, what is your opinion of them??

Thanks.

I'm running a baldwin---part #BF1221. It's a combo fuel filter/water separator, but with just a threaded drain on the bottom. It's a good bit larger than the factory size. My buddy at Fleet Pride took good care of me on this one---7 bucks I've been happy with the filter so far.

edit: http://catalog.baldwinfilter.com/ Type fs1221, then the oem button, then xreference to get all the specs

According to this catalog,
http://home.comcast.net/~sbcook66/sk.../2004-2005.pdf

the BF1221 cross-references to the Fleetguard FS1221, as noted above. One usage for the FS1221 is shown as the Cummins 6CTA. Price at $9.95 isn't bad.

Might have to try this.

Regards, DBF

I didn't give a Hastings/Baldwin (or Wix) number because they are shorter than the Fleetguard and Donaldson filters.

They have a little drain in the bottom of them to drain the water.

I am running the Fleetguard. My opinion is that bigger is better.

Here's a pic of the stocker next to the 1221.

Only thing, the FS1221 does NOT come with the square cut o-ring/gasket that goes on the fuel heater adaptor/nipple. Not sure about the Baldwin filter packaging. Keep that in mind, save your old one or inquire about a new one at the truck dealer/shop.

I've never understood why they bother with that thing anyway. I've never seen one on an oil filter. Any trash that got between the threads would be pretty tiny.

I reused the old one.

What is that gasket's purpose anyways?

I always figured it was to make sure nothing could get from the dirty side to the clean side through the threads. Seems kinda pointless, doesn't it?

I was wondering the same thing. No gasket with the Baldwin, either. I re-used the old one.

Where are you guys buying the Fleetgaurd FS1221, or the Baldwin BF1221??

I am having no luck getting even a price on either.

Scheids doesn't even list them.

Thanks.

I get mine from Cummins. Every time I need to order something I have them throw a fuel filter in with it.

Fleet Pride had the Baldwin in stock, as did the local Mack dealer. And, even though the Baldwin is smaller than the Fleetguard, I pulled out my emergency Purolator and WOW is that thing tiny I threaded the WIF sensor into it and put it behind the seat.

Got the Fleetguard $$ from Cummins, the Baldwin from a local Baldwin distributor. You could try going to www.baldwinfilters.com and look up a distributor. They are less expensive than Fleetguard, but much better than anything else, besides FG.

If you tend to go through alot of filters (multiple vehicles, obsessive filter changing, whatever) you should check out:

http://www.filter1.com

It is the online factory outlet for Wix. Their filters are comparable in quality to the best out there, and the prices can't be beat. Really. If you order at least $50 at a pop shipping is free. Set up an account and getting filters becomes an easy, hassle-free low cost non-issue. You can set up an online order form to list all your vehicle's filters. Pretty cool, IMHO.

Looks good, I just wonder one last thing, are the factory filter and the 1221 rated the same in Microns. If so I would definetly make the change. I will have to remember to have our local truck dealer look up that info.
I just called the local KW dealer, the book isnt giving that info, they quoted me $11.26 for the 1221 and $11.64 for the 1232
