Is it better to Remove my Air Filter Box or Swiss Cheese it?
Just wondering what most folks prefer. I currently have a K&N in a Stock Air Filter Box. I'd rather remove the box than drill holes in it (figure I'd get better air flow that way).

to me, it's be better to leave the stock box intact and where it's at, and just revamp the 'ram air' piping to the box

I like my BHAF. Haven't seen any posts from Old Smoky recently so I don't know if he's still making his BHAF mount.

When I first started bombing my 92, I swiss cheesed my air box. To tell you the truth, I didnt see any gains worth posting. But, after removing the stock box and just using the flange that bolts to the filter and seals it on 92 and older first gens, I noticed a pretty good gain. I am now running my own custom intake with a K&N RE0880 and I am really liking it.

FWIW....93 models had a different style air box than the 92 and older first gens. The 92 models had a all thread nut that ran through the filter and and lock nut to attach the filter to the flange for the filter box.

Monty - any pics of your custon setup? Is there a filter you can simply bolt direct to the turbo intake or will heat kill it?
Looking to fab an intake setup in near future.
TIA - ZRX

I may actually try Monty's idea but for now I did the swiss cheese manouver.

I drilled 3 holes, about 2" in diameter, in a triangle shape just above the stock inlet. Then on the back side (facing the firewall) and as low down to the fender as possible I did an oval 2" diameter opening similar to the stock one.
After that, I got some screen door screening, my glue gun and tacked the screen over all the holes... works good and no large crap gets in. Turbo sounds alot better too....

bob.

I just opened up the original hole for the inlet from the front end by about 2X. Now its about 3-4" high and the same width across. I wanted to get as much air from the front as possible. And since my EGT's aren't a problem yet, I don't need to funnel in any extreme cold air. Like Bushy said, better sound from the turbo and hey, less inlet restriction can't hurt.

J-eh

Basically, my setup is much like the ASA Intake that is being sold. Since I didnt want to dish out the bucks, I just made my own. Get a 4" 45 exhaust fitting and cut 1" off of both ends, and get 1 4" 90* rubber intercooler boot, and I used my existing cone type K&N RE0880. Since the intake hose is now smooth, unlike the stock hose, you can really hear it spool. This will work for now, but I will be looking to funnel in more CooOOoollLLLL air 8)
Below is a picture of the ASA intake system...Mine is EXACTLY the same, but less moolah spent.
