Smile Best Towing Turbo on a Budget

Hey guys I have my truck in the shop right not for some pump work and injectors and I will be getting some gauges within the week and I was wondering what the best towing turbo on a budget is? I have a 5 speed so I know about the instant spool of the 12cm. Also my truck is not going to have any pump tweaks done to it, because I am not on the quest for big horse power, but it will have the 3200 gov spring. I do tend to pull from time to time, and I want a set up that with not raise EGT's and I do not want any surging. I guess you could say I am looking for low end torque. I do not want to sacrifice to much mpg, prices obviously. I have some ideas because I did a search but all the info that I found about towing was sort of all over the place, nothing seemed to be the tried and true turbo set up for towing. "I HATE MY 21 LAGMASTER"

Any help will be greatly appreciated, on my quest for the perfect turbo

I'm towing a lot more since I retired. Check my sig. Right now I am running EGT's around 1250/1300 without H2O and Methanol. The turbo is a 16cm exhaust on a H1C with a HTT stage IV compressor and housing. I hit 28 to 30 pounds boost pulling the trailer up a slight grade WOT. Very little smoke unless I stab the throttle.

Ben, if you are not going to tweak the pump, there will be no need for a larger turbo, plus, there will be no EGT issues without more fuel. I would swap out the hot side with something smaller, but for towing I think the 12 may start to weeeze a little with the 4.10's on the highway. Im swapping in a 14cm WG housing soon, so my 16 would be available.

I'd go w/the 12cm on an IC 5sp truck. I was a little leery about trying it myself for fear of high EGT. But I have my VE maxed and it's fine. Highest EGT I've seen was 1250 on a sustained (10sec) WOT romp up my test hill and it appeared to to be stabilized (not climbing) there. Factor in around 100deg for the Powerstroke IC and it's still a no-brainer, even without the bigger intercooler.

Most importantly though, the driveability and throttle response is much improved over the 16cm. It's building useable boost by about 1300 rpm and a stab at the skinny pedal anywhere thereafter blips it right up to 28lbs, absolutely no lag whatsoever.

Since you have the "LAGMASTER", the 12cm waste gated ext housing will probably make you thing you have a new truck!!!!!!

If your going to leave the pump stock I can't see how egt's will be a problem.........even with the 3200 spring.

Some day i will be able to say this from experince...........................

Your right Mike I will some day but when I get my truck back from southwest diesel it will have a fresh pump on there and I don't know it want to touch a fresh pump. I was thinking about a 12cm on my H1C but I hear it has suging issues at low rpm, ture?

Hey Mike how did the 16 work? Better spool up?

I was thinking about either a HX-35 or a WH1C, I was thinking that a wastegate would be nice but since I am not touching the pump quite yet I do not know if I need to. What HTT set up would be good with a stock pump, a Stage III?

Thanks keep it coming

I hadn't thought about the surge issue..........I don't thing a stock pump would surge.

the early HX35 or Wh1c would be the simple answer.

The wastegate is good if you build excessive boost, but with everything stock you probably wont see more than 15lbs of boost---thats what I had before tweeking. I like the 16, it was a great improvement but Im trying the 14 to build boost a little sooner...dang 35's are slowing me down .
