best all/mud terrain tire - performance/wear

here in central illinois i need a good all around tire for snow and mud i dont see any sand or rocks. i'm not off roading daily but if i want to venture into some uncharted territory i dont want to be afraid to. i will mostly be driving with these on the road so tread wear is major. i would like to get around 50k out of my next set if possible. ride quality is not major but i would like them to be quiet. i dont WANT to spend alot on them, but if i have to for a set that lasts i will. like i say do it once and do it right. so what do you guys run and what kind of luck have you had with all/mud terrain tires?

I'm running pro comp mud terrains, not bad tires, but i wouldn't suggest them for you. I've got about 10k on them, and probably 75% left, so wear is pretty good. They have great grip in mud and dirt, but they break apart on the rocks. Both fronts have good size chunks out of the lugs from the limited amount of trail riding I've done. I've heard the bridgestone at's are pretty good, but haven't tried them.

Tires

My Boss Uses Toyo Open Country M/T and they are quiet and chew through the mud, he has gotten 70 000 km out of his last set, which he was not easy with and they are load rated, they will be my next set for sure JMO

Ive been hearing bad things about the bfg's, bad and good batches maybe. My family runs coopers, had very good luck with the s/t, very long wearing, good in snow and mud.

I would go with a procomp A/T from what it sounds like your doing. They are great in the snow not bad offroad and have the 50,000 mile tread wear warrenty. They're no swamper in the mud but the do pretty good for and A/T.

I drive gravel/rock roads daily with my truck. If you do go with BFG ATs be warned that you will have no paint or undercoating left. They are an effective sandblaster. They stripped the wiring, paint, ect.. off the last vehicle I put them on. NO more of them for me.

I goto the local farmers coop and get whatever is on sale. Get tires for $75 each usually and run them 30-40K miles.

Mastercraft Courser AT2's...heavily siped from the factory, 50k mile treadwear rating, and decently aggressive for an all terrain tire. Been impressed for the 3k miles I've had them for. I can say they've been wonderful in ice, snow, and rain.

The BF All Terrain are probably your best bet. They last good and they are good if you want to go out and explore a bit. My dad has them on his 2 generation and on my mom's 2001 Jeep Cherokee. I have me a 1994 Jeep Cherokee as of now and i have BF Mud Terrain. They aren't a bad tire either, but they won't last you as long. So if i was you i'd go with the BF All Terrain

For M/T's Im a fan of Dueller M/Ts
Ive had a set on my FJ60 for almost 5 years and they still got descent tread on them. And as for mud performance, there were many cases where I didnt need to lock my 60 into 4wheel cause they got such good traction.

thats my 2¢

The BFG'S are definitley hard to beat Ive had several sets, here latley Ive also heard some good things about the Nitto Terra Grappler AT'S Ive seen em on alot of trucks around here and they are priced right.Im running Dunlope mud rovers and have been happy so far but you probably dont want anything that aggressive
