Bearing NUT?

It really hacks me off when I go spend good money on books and more money on an online data bank and I still can't find the tightening specs I need for a simple brake job.

Does anyone know how tight the axel wheel bearing nut should be on an 89 Dodge CTD D-350 dually? It is the Dana 60 or 70 rear end, whichever is bigger. The nut is 2-1/2 inch across and doesn't appear to have a lock mechanism except for the plastic insert. It has roller bearings so it needs a preload but I can't find the specs.

Thanks

Edwin

Talking

The rear axle nut can be tightened by using a
2 9/16" axle nut socket.

Tighten the nut with the socket to 120-140 ft lbs. Then back off 120 degrees.

on my chilton book it reads as follows:full floating axle rear wheel bearings (which is a 70 like yours) tighten the adjusting nut to 120-140 ft. lbs. (while rotating the wheel of course, to ensure proper seating), then back the nut off 1/3 turn which will provide .001-.008 endplay, then install the lockring onto the spindle keyway. etc...

Mine doesn't have a lockring. It has the plastic insert in the nut which I assume keeps it from rotating once it's set. Should it have an additional lockring? There wasn't one on it. The books I have don't have any data at all.

Thanks

The small V shaped piece of metal that inserts into the nylock nut has been updated. You can get an updated 2 nut setup from http://www.quad4x4.com

I saw that! I didn't think it would do much to hold the nut in place. Thanks for the info.

I think it is scary just having that little bitty bent metal piece holding the complete frontend together. It does the trick but man, I just can't believe something so simple works so well.
