autometer egt probe ?

Searching around here, I have heard that the autometer EGT probe is a bit long for pre turbo install. I have a Z-series guage on the way and was wondering what I need to buy to hold the probe further out from the bottom of the manifold. I'm guessing some type of iron plumbing fitting?? I believe it is a 1/8" probe and I would like to have all the stuff I need before the guage gets here. Any help?
I also ordered the single A-pillar guage gizmo from Geno's garage (really nice guys there). I will try to take pics of the install to help future folks out. Thanks again all.

Unless they've changed something since I got mine the depth is adjustable.

I used the Autometer probe in the pre-turbo location and haven't had any problems. I've had the turbo removed since then and checked the probe to make sure it wasn't touching the bottom and not blocking airflow too much.

If it was adjustable, I didn't notice it. Maybe I'll have to go back outside and check now.

The setup as it comes from AutoMeter puts the probe very low in the manifold. The probe has a ridge in it that acts as a compression sleeve, all I did was put that ridge outsde the fitting and use a standard 1/4" compression sleeve to hold the probe. Probably 5 cents at the local hardware store.

Hmm...that sounds like a good idea. I would like the probe to sit as high as possible and it is kind of low now.

Do you have any close-up pics of your setup so I can see this compression sleeve you're talking about?

It doesn't look like anything different from the outside.

Compression sleeves look like this:

Same here, Z-series egt. My probe sits about 3/4 inch from the manifold floor, no adaptors needed in my case. One thing you have to watch out for when drilling/tapping the manifold. Make sure you use a 1/8 pipe thread tap and DO NOT run the tap all the way thru, otherwise by the time the pipe fitting hits it`s interference seal it very well might be too far down. I ran my tap about 1/2 way, just enough so i had good solid thread engagement when i screwed the probe in. It might take a little trial and error but better to test fit it 3 times than making a doostop out of your exh man. Also make sure you don`t use to big of a bit to drill, IIRC 17/64 is coming to mind but i don`t remeber what I used for sure.

What Chris said! NPT is a tapered thread. You can make it go as deep or shallow as you like. Just make sure to get enough threads for a good bite on it.

I have an autometr EGT gauge. THe length of the probe was never an issue. When I tapped the hole in the manifold I only went far enough to get a good seal.

Thanks a ton guys. Looks like I only need to tap the hole so I can get enough to hold it in there.

Any other tips???? I plan on hooking up to the dash lights so the guage will dim with the others (but who uses that anyways?) In the fusebox, the illumination guage lights are on a 3 amp fuse. Is this enough for the pyro also? Thanks...

I would run the pyro off a different circuit so it cuts off with the ignition.

Good idea Wanna, but I would also like the illimination lights to function with the rest of my lights. Please forgive me, I can tear this engine and rebiuld it in my sleep, as long as I don't have to touch any electronic craap!!!!
What fuse is the best to tie into so I get illumination and lights at night??
And how do I put up pics so this whole install so I don't have to keep bothering ya'll for future BOMBERS......Thanks, Jeff

Also when you drill the hole for the pyro, get a magnet and pull the bigger peases out so thay don't go thru the turbo!

What Wanna said - run the guage itself switched. The gauge "lights" don't draw much current, though. I have 4 additional gauge lights off that 3amp fuse. No prob so far - one to go!
