Well besides the stock one (the 518 is a reliable trans), I'd say a built 47RH with a good converter is the best ,
Its a fairly straight forward swap and the one "archer39" has in his truck is awesome!! its all goerend! trust me i rode in it and video'd BEFORE the trans swap and after and theres no comparison, you'd swear it was a different truck.
the only that sucks is, the 47RH trans itself is getting hard to find because it was only used 2 years.... They were pretty crappy in stock form, my dad had 2 95's with 47rh's and one of them only had 82,000 orig. miles and the converter slipped so bad with nothing but some AFC tweaking.
and a converter for a 47RH is more expensive then a non lockup converter....actually the whole or deal with the 47RH swap is more expensive but worth it!

The 727 and the 518 are both equal in reliability. I'd say the 518 is more desirable for the simple fact that is has an overdrive gear, while the 727 doesn't. Basically, the 518 is a 727 with an overdrive.

I've heard there are far less issues with the 727's due to simplicity. I think the 518's had issues with OD more than the tranny itself really.
I may be wrong, but I think the 727's need bands adjusted where as I think that the 518 may not. IE, less maintenance, but I think its a simple job.
I know my 727 is much tighter than my 518, but the mileage is really no comparisson.

they both need their bands adjusted. a 518 and 727 are the same trans expect the 518 has overdrive. parts are interchangeable between them the same goes for a 47rh and 47re.

i am sure you know this Brandon but the way you worded it is kind of unclear. just so others know my trans has only a Goerend toruqe converter and valve body and both of them have been outstanding.

I'm doing a 5 speed swap to my friends truck. All original 727 and the truck has 410k miles. Seals at both ends were perfect! My truck still has a 727 with 300k miles and its all original

Both transmissions have the same ratios, but the 518 has an overdrive. You can;t really compare mileage between the two, as the 727 was offered with 3.07's and the 518 was offered with either 3.54's or 4.10's. I've been told a 727 with 3.07's is like a 518 with 4.10's.
