Mine had no ridge on it, but the pivot bushing was shot. I dont think that buying one has anything to do with smart shopping when you live where there is'nt much to choose from in the line of parts stores.rebuilding a starter only takes an extra 30 minnutes compared to changing to a new one, but only costs 32 buck's to rebuild it.compared to 129.00 buck's.

I notice the same belt wear problem on my truck today,
It turns out that the rebuilt alternator I had recently put on came with
a narrower pulley and I didn't notice the slight difference in width's
DOH!
