Anyone running Air to Water intercooler?

After installing my big *** tranny cooler i dont think there is much room in the 2" space up front to run an air to air, so i am thinking about an air to water that i can fit under the hood. They run cooler IAT's and fit in tight places.

So what do you guys think? Air to Water, or just move my tranny cooler and put in a regular intercooler.

How much is a replacement intercooler for a 91-93 from the dealer anyway?

The air to water units that I have seen use engine coolant. If the engine is running at 200 degrees, then you will never get your air below that temp.
The air to air units are capable of much bigger temp changes.
I would definately try and install an air to air unit.

Air to water units use a heat exchanger, kinda like there own radiator. My buddy is pushing 1000rwtq out of his turbo 408 LS1 with an air to water and he never gets much over 100* IAT, even on long nights of racing.

I dont think i will be in a long hunt for huge power like some, i just want simple, cheap, and effective. And i want to hit decient power to beet up on some ricers.

91-93 intercoolers are no longer available from dealer. A few vendors and Banks in particular make an upgrade or replacement IC. Expect to pay about $1000 for one. Stay away from used, they leak.

If your engine is running at 200* you're not worried about IAT, you got more things to be concerned with. Get a 160* t-stat and see 160-170, maybe 180* coolant temps tops.

IAT with a IC will be in the range of 120-150*. So yes you won't get temps as low as an air to air as with an air to water.

New Cummins air to water aftercooler -$325. Then you need 6 new injection lines that are on an A-W aftercooled motor. These lines are routed around the cooler mounted to the intake manifold. So you're looking at another high dollar purchase. I'd guess another $300 in injection lines. BUT if you're lucky enough to find a decent or any for that matter in a junkyard or on a core GRAB IT ! Don't forget to get the injection lines, line holders too.

I'd love to find a aftercooler and VE pump injection lines off it too.

The bigger IC on that page doesnt look too bad. I found a 2005 cummins IC with all the piping and intake horn for $300, but i dont know if its too big to fit.

My understanding is that the IC from a 2nd gen will fit, so that is the bigger one on that page, and its cheaper!!

careful of the 05. most of them have plastic ends! NOT good if your planning any extra boost.
