Its a good idea to check the shifter forks over carefully hwile you have the top off.
Edwin did a good writeup on getrag shifter problems. The title is Getrag Shifter - How It Works.

I would love to have this manual as well. Does anyone have any experience with "rebuild kits" like this one -
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...TQ:MOTORS:1123
Also they have a kit without the synchros for about $110 less.
My trans shifts fine, but i can tell that the bearings are going out .. (infamous low speed 4th gear grinding) Also, acceleration isn't as smooth anymore, like the trans main shaft is vibrating as more power is applied. Leads me to think its a bearing issue.
Also - changed the oil last week and there were a good amount of silvery metal shavings in it. No brass as far as i could tell, so I'm guessing the synchronizers are still good.
Should I try to save the $110 and get the one with no synchros?
Also - (sorry for the long post) how difficult is it to put one of these things back together? Is a press needed? How tough is shimming the bearings to the right clearance?
Thanks a ton.

Does anyone have the PDF file handy for the Getrag? Mine is a '92. I'm ok with the overhaul (retired trans guy) just would like info on the specs like bearing preload.
Ayery....to answer your question a press would be very helpfull to press the new bearings on. You could cool the shafts in the freezer and warm the bearings in hot oil then they should drop on. I have seen a properly sized pipe used to install bearings too. As for saving cash on the syncros, if it shifted fine then just inspect them real close when it's apart. The kits often have lesser quality rings than the original or OE ones.
Thanks
