Any way to ID a Torque Converter without removing the Trans ?
Im trying to figure out if mine is original or not. I had always assumed it was, as it seems kinda loose, but I drove a buddies 2nd gen with an "aftermarket" and his feels even worse. I don't really have a point of reference to what is good or bad.
This is the first Auto I have had in years so I am not exactly sure whats normal or not. I do know the trans was rebuilt about 25k ago, (truck is at 225k) but I dont know any other details besides that.
I pulled the inspection cover, the TQ is painted black, but no drain plug. All I could see on the side was a balancing weight. It was pretty shiny, other than a couple skuffs, but i dont imainge it sees much wear on that surface being enclosed in the bellhousing.
It cruises about 70mph at 2k on flat ground empty (stock tire size, and stock 3.53 gears). I dont notice a huge difference between shifts, maybe 100-300 RPM from a stop at WOT..

My 92 slush box is ok, but the converter acts liked it is locked up when you start out or even going. It's so tight that it won't let the engine flash up a little while getting down on the skinny pedal taking off. It just starts off at a slow steady pace and steadily picks up speed.

Mine was black and shiney after 96k and 17 yrs of service.
Most shops will replace the tq converter when they rebuild a tranny. It's usually part of the price. If they didn't, i wouldn't recommend using them.
Ask the Previous owner.
