Any Auto Trans experts out there?

Any auto trans experts out there?
I'm rebuilding a 46RH for a friends truck and I need a second opinion on something.

I'm trying to install the low reverse drum onto it's support, the book shows
that there is a 2 tab washer and a snap ring that holds it on.

When I put mine together, there is not enough room for both the snap ring
and the tabbed washer, just a snap ring.

I cant recall when I took it all apart if there was a tab washer in there or not,
didn't find any used 2 tab washers in the pile of old parts.

I asked the folks at Goerend and they said that some of the early units
didn't use the washer.

Would any of you folks be able to confirm this?
Will I be alright with just the snap ring and no washer?

I found confirmation on a chrysler Jeep techincal site.
Basically, there are three types of drums.
1 snap ring and thrust washer
2 snap ring only
3 no snap ring or thrust washer
If there is room for the thrust washer then use it, if there isn't
then leave it out. Apparently there is even another drum that eliminates
the thrust washer and the snap ring as well.

The old units didn't use a snap ring or washer, non O/D 727. But you're right, if there is not room for the washer then it doesn't use it.
