Another block heater question...only different

Kind of a stupid question but anyways...When i plug my truck in, or have it click on via a timer, what happens if something shorts out while i am sleeping or just not paying attention? Is the truck going to catch on fire? I have seen several farm tractors in the shop up here that were totally demolished because the block heater caused a fire. I have a GFCI equipped extention cord...would that in anyway lessen any risk of anything happening. I am probably over-worrying, but i just wanna take care of my new toy.

Deffinatly a good question though.

I've never heard about one burning up, but you don't want to leave it plugged in for a long time, there's really no need to unless you want to run your electric bill up alot!!. Just get a timer and have it turn on a couple hours before you want to start, thats all it takes.

A GFCI outlet should protect against any mishaps. I put mine on a timer plugged to a gfci curcuit. Both the circuit and the timer are rated for 30A. Last winter, timed for two hours before start @15 below and the grids didn't even cycle!

Well I left on short notice so I dont have hardly any anti freeze in it. I dont pay electric so I dont mind. I leave 2-3 heaters on all winter to keep my garage warm too. Man I would hate to see that bill.

My sensor is bad too, so mine always cycle at every start up. Been that way for 8 years from what I hear.
