I asked the consignment dealer if making an offer on a vehical would be like offering on a home. He said thats what it would be like. I did not think about it at the time, but he gave me a piece of paper to write my name and phone # on and I put on it $4500 contingient on inspection. I did not sign my name or give any money. The dealer called me back several days later and said the owner would go for $5000. Then about 3 hours later the dealer said that he would go $4700. I said that I was interested and that I would like to have it inspected.
The dealer took it to my mechanic and after the inspection I called the dealer and said I was through looking at the truck and would have to think about it. He said ok.
Right from the getgo I told the dealer that I've had bad luck buying used vehicals.
Right now I've spent $169. I love the drivetrain but the body seemed really, (PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THIS PERSONALLY!!) kind of tinney compared to the old 73 chevy I have. That's the only reason I don't think I can live with it. I haven't heard from the dealer since, but if they want to have the inspection for the next buyer I would like to help. I don't think I'm obligated but I had a bad thought as I left the mechanic that I might be and not know what I did. Thanks for your imput and I will let you all know if I end up having to buy it.

Doesn't sound like anyting you wrote could be construed as binding, based on the verbiage, but you probably should not have written any numbers at that pioint - just confusing the issue. The numbers would be contingent on the inspection, in my way of doing things.

Sounds like it failed the inspection, bro. The mechanic has a list of things that need to be replaced. This is because the truck was not properly maintained by the owner.

NO way you should have to buy vehicle.

your offer was contingent upon inspection of vehicle, which didn't meet your expectation.

sounds like sour grapes to me! to spend $169 for an inspection shows you was a serious buyer. if vehicle didn't pass inspection... that's the way the cards fall.

I got estimate on all the maintence items and it was $1400 plus it needed a windshield and the cruise control did not work. Tailgate would not open either. I never called back and I did not hear from the dealer. I still like the sound of the 1st gens though. Thanks everyone.

I would tell them that you are not interested and then be done with it. You've committed to nothing. If you haven't heard anything from them, then they have probably moved on also. Move on..you'll find a better one out there...

If you are still interested, you could try to lowball him and cite the repair list you have in your hand. If he doesn't go for it, then find another. I bought my early 91 D250 reg cab 5 spd for $3700 with 169k on it. Everything worked, good body except for minor rust over the rear wheels. This was almost 3 years ago.

Thats because you never made an offer!

I agree with Bearkiller, your word should be as good as your signature. And in this case, it sounds like the truck failed to pass your offer criteria and they haven't yet accepted your price. Maybe if they accepted that day, then OK. But come back later and accept your offer? No, thats coming back later and making YOU an offer.
