Am I obligated to buy the truck after I've offered?
I posted that I was looking at a 92 2x4 5 speed and I wrote my name and phone number on a piece of paper. I did not sign it or give any money. I had the consignment dealer contact the seller and he said $4700. I just had the dealer take it to a mechanic and the mechanic said it looked good except that he had a list of maintance things needed, such as changing all oils, filters, steering arm members, cruise control not working and etc.
Am I obligated to buy this rig? I called the consignment dealer and told him I needed to thing about it.
I test drove the truck and it sure is rough riding and the clutch would chatter a bit, but the rest of the truck seemed alright. The only thing that bothered me was that going up a slightly bumpy road it seemed that the dash would squeek like crazy on the passenger side. It drove me nuts and I don't want it. Would I be obligated to buy this rig? Thanks.

You singed no contract to buy, you have tested it thoroughly, and decided it wasnt up to your standards. If you dont want it, dont buy it. No harm no foul. If it looks decent, it will sell fairly quickly anyway.
If I had the cash on hand (or if he'd trade me straight across for my jalopy), I might be interested. The creaking is likely cowl cracks, and a chattery clutch is not abnormal, esp if the transmission leaks a little.

unless you explicitly signed an agreement to buy. you shouldn't be forced into buying.
anytime someone sends a vehicle to mechanic for examination. that's saying.... hey, I'd like to have the truck checked out and if it passes I'll buy it.
since the truck didn't pass inspection. you should not have to buy!
now if the truck checked out and you told them you would buy if truck checked out. that would be another matter.

It all depends on exactly what you said at the time.
I have all kinds of people tell me "hold this for me and I will be here with the cash tomorrow".
If I don't make them give me a non-refundable cash deposit, of enough to know they are serious, they never show back up.
When I tell a man I will give X amount of dollars for something, right now, not two days later, I figure I have committed myself to pay that price if he says sold; if the realization that I have just let my mouth overload my tail-quarters, and I start to feel like throwing-up, and I want out of the deal, none of that matters, as I have just bought it and will pay for it.
On the other hand, if that person does not accept my offer right then, and I leave without us doing business, he need not look me up, in a couple of days, and expect that my bid still holds, as I may have spent my money on something else.
Where I come from, a man's word is still his bond, more binding in principle than any paper that might have, or have not, been signed.
It is all about one's integrity, sort of like "Pride goeth before a fall."; for, when a man's pride goeth, he's gonna fall.

Gotta go with the above^^^...short, sweet and to the point!(but I hafta ask, did you mean 'better', not 'beter'? 'Cuz no matter what the price, you can always find a 'better beater' - unless someone beats 'ya to the better!) Unrelated pop quiz: Why did Mickey Mantle want to marry Betty Crocker? To make a better batter, of course. BTW, I best beat it back to base before becoming brutally boring...Bye!

I'd stay away just for all the stuff wrong with it, least of which is the obvious cowl cracks. Sounds like that consignment dealer is just a middleman working as a dealer for private sellers.
Makes no difference either way, you should not be obligated. But I missed the part about "after I've offered," in the title of your post. Exactly what did you offer to who? I get the feeling we are not hearing the whole story here.
