Almost ready to.....
.... tackle the transmission. I have alot of questions before I dig in and hope someone knows what I need to. First, is the '94-'95 2wd auto trans. a 47RH or is called something different? I was going to swap my truck over to a 4wd but don't need 4wd really. Plus, I found a very nice '93 1 ton 2wd single to swap to cummins dually.
Second, is it possible to make a 4wd trans into a 2wd? I have a '96 4wd 47RE that needs a valve body and a converter. Can this in any way, shape or form be swapped to 2wd and accept a 47RH valve body?
What I am really trying to get at is a 2wd auto trans with a lock-up converter. Can anyone help? Thanks ahead of time.

Any trans can be switched to either 2wd or 4wd, just by changing the tail housing. Due note that RH and RE tail housing are different in length because RE's don't have hydraulic governors in them.
From your post I know you have a 47RE 4x4. What else do you have? Do you have a 2wd A518? If you do you have enough parts to put together a 2wd 47RH.
Going from a RE to a RH is a little tricky because some other parts need to be changed. I've done it and I'll try my best to explain without confusing you too much.
When the tail housing is off of the main tranmission case there is the overdrive piston and overdrive piston retainer that are at the rear of the main case. RH's have holes in the retainer that tubes slip into to send the governor signals to the valvebody, RE's don't have those holes. The trouble is to get the retainer out to switch it you have to completely tear down the trans. Not really a problem is your doing a full trans overhaul. Also need a bushing for the connector hole because the RH 3 wire plug is smaller in diameter.
You could make a 518 lockup by switching the input shaft and front pump out of your 47RE and getting a RH valve body (you need one regardless), but at that point I would dive in deeper and switch the front planet for the steel one in the 47RE. At that point you mind as well just use the 47 case.
Clear as mud?
I don't know if you still have my number or not, but I know we've spoke about this before. I'll PM you mine again just in case.

I do still have a 518 in my truck. Am I able to use the 518 tail on the RE? And how about a VB, go aftermarket or try to find a stock one? I have a trans-go shift kit sitting in the garage that I could slap in a stocker. Thanks for the knowledge.

You could bolt it (518 od unit)on the back of the 47 and change out the rear support with the governor line holes but the diesel OD planetaries are heavier duty and there are more clutch discs in the OD unit. JD, the steel front carrier will not fit directly onto a 93 and back output or intermediate shaft without resplining, course several suppliers offer just such a front carrier.

Depends on what you intend on doing. Stay stock if just light hauling, but if gonna haul heavy or add a ton of fuel. Get the after market stuff. Thats JMHO! As far as what will swap I have no idea, wish I did though. I know there is quite a few threads related to this. At least I think. I'd do a search for different topics . I've started doing that and it answers a lot of my questions quicker than posting. Good Luck! Sorry I not more help.

Thanks man. The heaviest I haul would be a 985 New Holland skidsteer, which is a pretty hefty load on it's own and adding tracks and bucket/forks. But that's about the heaviest I care to go, not much love for the DOT if you know what I mean. I really do need to know what VB to use and converter, if anyone could help. Thanks.

I run a Goerend converter and valve body. I have what Dave calls a 800/300 which are measurements on the stator, I had a chance to ride in a truck with a 900/400 and its a little looser than mine. That would probably work better for you, it will allow you to get the turbo lit much quicker.

Does anyone know where to find an exploded diagram of the 518's, RH's and RE's? I think I'm going to start the destruction this weekend.
The 518 VB cannot be used in the trans I am trying to build, right?

Had a converter given to me this morning. The guy thought it to be a 518 TC but he wasn't sure, he did know it was ordered for an auto Cummins 2 years ago and was never picked up. Is there a difference between the lockup and non TC's? If there is I will just sell it or use it in something else, it is brand new in the box still so it can't be bad to have either way.
