Almost lost my getrag...

I noticed some new noise coming from my Getrag. Mostly
in 5th gear as well as some new noise coming from my t-case
shifter. I figured it should come out and get looked at.

I pulled it out and once I got the output shaft removed I
found the output shaft bearing had failed in the form of
pitting both the race and the rollers...DEEP pitting.

If I had waited to pull it apart I would have lost preload on
the input/output shaft and then BOOM...no more trans.

Although it would have been nice to have blown a gear
through the side of the case so I could have put a 4500 in.
At least a bearing kit is cheap compared to a 4500.

Does anyone have a good source for getrag rebuild kits?
What are they costing. I was looking at the Drivetrian Doctors
website and they have one for 215.68 for bearings and seals,
no syncros.

Thanks

I don't know if they are in the links here, but Standard Transmission out of Texas has all the parts and pieces for the Getrag.... I will try to see if I have the URL...

Re:Almost lost my getrag...

My getrag is getting weak, loosing syncros and 3rd gear shifter rails too and its now starting to make some noise. I would like to put in a NV4500 but I don't have the cash or the time. I won't be bombing my truck any more than it is for at least 2 more years and I don't tow very much so I don't have to worry about eating my trans up. I need to get this taken care of fast, I do not want my getrag to go BOOM and leave me high and dry. I saw that I can buy parts for the getrag at STD Trans. but can I buy a good reman or should I just shut'er down and get it rebuilt? Oh, I only want to do this ONCE, I hate doing spendy things twice!

Re:Almost lost my getrag...

Ya know, it's been about 6 years since mine pooped out but that's what my countershaft bearings looked like!! I could move it back and forth about 1/4''! My input & output were like new, in fact they are still going! If my brain cell still works, isn't that 5th gear next to the bearing? I couldn't believe how small it was. Good luck on your rebuild. If you need any assistance, let me know. It may take a minute, but it will come back to me : Jim

Re:Almost lost my getrag...

Hey Paws,

Man I would get it done. The rebuild kit from standard trans
looks like a good deal at 238.00. My noise started about 1500 miles ago. You saw the picture.

2manydogs,
Thanks for the offer I think I can pull this off. Things are
goign pretty well I got all the bearings pressed off today and
i just need to gather some parts to put it all back together.

Re:Almost lost my getrag...

Hey how did the rebuild go? Mine is coming out next Friday. Decided I didn't have the time to do the rebuild my self, sending it out to get rebuilt while I put in the seats and rebuild the front end. Told the guy I wanted bearings, synchros and to fix the shift rails any other suggestions? He quoted me 6-800 bucks, sound good?
