Advice on HX 35 12cm2 upgrade

Looking into upgrading and found an HX 35 12cm2 turbo at a local dismantler. My questions are: Check my sig. In a couple of days I will be adding the Smokey fuel pin...will upgrading to the HX 35 balance everything out or am I fine where I'm at? My driving consists of a 1 hour + commute each way with a mix of stop and go with times at 70-75 mph. I see very little towing, if any, with my truck. Next question: The HX 35 does not have the wastegate...got lost in the dismantle process, I guess. Who makes a good replacement? Question 3: What should I be checking for in analizing if this turbo is in decent shape? The chump wants 300.00 bucks and I'm wondering if that's too much? Last question: Is upgrading to an HX-35 good as far as future upgrades for exhaust housings, such as converting over to a 14cm2 housing? How do I know that the turbo on the dismantler's shelf isn't already a 14cm2? I love the spool up of my HY 9cm2 set up, but now I understand what everybody says about "loosing your top end". I feel that after the fuel pin, My HY might be maxed out! So many questions...please advise. Carmine

i was under the impression you could put a 12cm2 housing on the HY turbo and it would be pretty much the same as the HX... i thought the turbine housing was the main difference.. am i way off?

With the fuel you have, I would go with the HX35 -12.. Good combo as the HY is pretty tiny and you would run into EGT probs...

hx-35 be a good choice, untill you really get up there in fuel, but theres little differance in it and hc-1 compressor map, if your want more fuel might look for a hx-40, but the hy-35 isnt very good past stock fuel that 9 housing cant deal with much more.

Yep the hx35 is a tough and proven turbo. But not for that price. $100 buck tops from a junkyard. I wouldn't even give that, maybe $50. Just figure a brand new 58mm wheeled modified PDR 35 is $625 last I checked.

Now my curiosity is up again. You guys always do this to me just when I think that I"m satisfied and don't need to bomb any more money into the truck. Can you have too much turbo? Now I know that if the tubo is too big it will not spool up but what if you put a HX40 on a basically stock engine with 3200 gov and fuel adjustments. It can't be worse than the 21cm, can it?

Carmyne-As Bill said, the price on this particular turbo is too high. I think an HX-35/12 cm wastegated turbo would be a small improvement on the top end and EGT but not huge. What's important to you? Spool-up or top end performance? With the Old Smokey pin and the big injectors you have enough fuel to run an HX-40 or an HTBG if top end is what you want.

Boatnik- Since you tow, you need to be very careful not to go too big on the turbo. It needs to be able to spool quickly at cruising RPM or you will have nasty EGT problems. An HX-40 would be a good fit for you if you added injectors into the mix. Right now you should stick with a hybrid or the stocker with an 18.5 or 16 cm housing.

I`m running pod`s, some moderate pump tweaks and a hybrid 35/40 with a 62mm compressor wheel and a 16cm2 housing. It spools just as good if not better than the H1C/16 combo that was on there.

62 wheel?? Homemade? Isn't HTT's top dog a 60mm wheel upgrade?

I'd have to agree...

$300 for a disassembled HX-35 missing parts is way too much.

I've got one on the classifieds that's complete and in good shape ready to run...and my ASKIN' price is less than that...

Right now I have the 16 on mine with POD's and I think she's just a might laggy out of the hole...but the 12 would be too small for me on top...for sure.

Maybe a 14 would be just perfect...

I had my 40 on before the injectors and 191dvs went in. It was driveable, but the extra fuel really helps to light it better on the bottom end. Had the plate in stock position at the time. Now, I'm basically at the limits of this turbo. ~44# boost and 1400*. Twins next, maybe?

I don't remember what a 21 cm2 is like on a 1st gen. Long time since I've been a stock one. I don't think you likea 40 on yours, unless you had more fuel. Laggy.

That's the "Stage IV". It's not on their site, you have to ask about it. That's what I'm running - and it ain't enough.

My last dyno session I did a run with the water/meth on but the AFC fuel totally off. I only lost 18 HP. I think I'm slightly overfueled.
