A518 woes
Went to look at a winter beater today. When I called the lady she said that her son had been using it to haul calves and the transmission quit cooperating. Her husband died 11 years ago and she didn't want to part with it but she and her son didn't drive it much the last few years so she though maybe someone else could fix it up nice.
It moved fine in the driveway so out on the road I went. About a half mile out it slowly came to a halt. I could feel it trying to move a little. Ended up towing it on the rest of the way from her son's house to hers for her. The trans fluid was a brownish color but smelled OK. The body on this truck is about as nice as you are going to find original. Does it sound like a fluid and filter change could fix it or is it fried? I'd love to have it but don't have a transmission sitting around.
BTW, it's a 90 half-ton, 318, 4x4, 3.5 gear ratio (can still read the option sticker on the underside of the hood), regular cab longbed. I was thinking if nothing else if it had a major melt-down mechanically I would have good body parts for the D250. Figured this was the best place to find info on the trans. If it is fried where is a good place to find a used or rebuilt one?
Oh, she is an 83 year old widow and says this truck will travel. I hope I am getting around half as well as she is when I am 70.

I thought of that. It hesitated when I dropped it into drive to pull out like it was low on fluid, but it was still over the stick when I checked it after it stopped. She had someone else wanted to look at it. I have a feeling I will kick myself for not telling her I'd take it. I had a filter in my truck too. May have been able to drive it home.
Maybe they will hear we towed it into her yard and still be there.

Nope, fuel injected 318 with a A518 AOD. Think I would need a stick shift computer for it to stick a 727 in for temporary.
I was surprised, I had read that the 318 got magnum-ized and an overdrive somewhere around 87-88 but had never seen it.

The magnum motor started in 91 I think. I have a 90 that has a tbi injected 318. The 727 would not even bolt up cause you should have a crank sensor and there is a knotch in the bell housing for it so nevermind that I was mistaken about what trans was in it sorry. I heard that there were some tbi motors that had od but there wasnt many I wonder if it has lock up???

No idea. I'm not sure it made it into Drive, though I think it did. You can notch the bellhousing on a 727 to clear the crank sensor. Computer might be troublesome though.
This could be a 91, I didn't look at the assembly date. She told me it's a 90. It turned over about three times and was running without giving it any gas.
I'll call in the morning and hope it is there. I should have told her I'd take it. I want to do a search for a used trans first.
