A518 Tranny + NP205 T-case weight? TC swap....

I was just curious if any of you guys know how much the drivetrain weights (A518 Tranny + NP205 T-case). I would like to swap Torque Convertors to something better but I don't really know if I want to try to man handle all that weight out of there? Obviously its WAY heavier than my Toyota Truck Drivetrain which I'm use to dealing with.

How difficult is it to do with a standard tranny jack and basic tools?

I don`t have the exact weights but they are REALLY heavy. You can drop the `case first esp since thats where most of the weight comes from.

I don't know about the tranny, but the NP205 wieghts in at about 175, so I've been told. It is all steel gears in a cast Iron case.

WOW - I did not realise the NP205 was that heavy... heck i'm going to have to use a tranny jack to remove the T-case.

I can put toyota T cases and trannies in by hand. These babies are a different story! My cheapie HF trans jack did its job but was a little wobbly under the weight of the trans and T case (separated).

I do them together with the antique trans jack I use. I can tell you it took 2 of us to put the T-case on the trans out from under the truck, I did one under the truck once and will never do it again unless I have to. To do it right you'd have to build up some blocks for the trans jack so it held the T-case clocked right so you don't have to rough handle it to get to go back on.

I welded up a plate that is approximately 1'X1' and put it on a regular floor jack. It worked good for me, but it might not be a bad idea to put some kind of bracket on the plate to keep things more stable.

Take the speed o gear off the t-case first. It's plastic and hard to find replacement.

I just sat up under my last 4x4 and pulled the t-case out. Could I do it now? maybe, maybe not. I'd say 175 is about right. About the same for the Getrag. Sorry, cant help you with the 518, though I wouldnt doubt 150 for it.

I hav ehad best luck getting trannies out by using a foor jack with the big saddle on it, then running a 1" ratchet strap around it, hooking it to itself. It will hold the tranny, yet allow some wiggle room to get it in and out.
