'93 CTD cuts out and dies...
cross posted from Yahoo groups, any help is appreciated .
The 'new to me' 93 CTD died tonight, requiring a tow home (from a
Ford....) I had driven it about 20 minutes, gauges ok, no CEL, or
warning (slight hestation 200yds prior to Death., was climbing a 6%
curvey grade ~40 MPH)
It was cutting out yesterday a few times, I drained off the fuel
filter and didn't find any water.
It has just started after sitting for a few hours.
I am suspecting electrical connection of some type, as it is having
some other issues, (headlights go out intermitantly, and flashers
work for a few minutes, then quit, and work occasionally. There is
high level of moisture in cab (water leak somewhere))
I power washed the engine and under hood a few days ago, It is now
rainy, snowy ~35 degrees.
Sorry for being a newbee, I have 17 VW diesels and was / am a farm
kid, so used to bit of trouble, and can usually find a way to make
it run to get home, but not tonight, would crank but no fire. I
really need this CTD to be dependable
Any help or direction appreciated.
What is a good manual for these?
Is there much electronics involved in this gen engine? Can I just
run a hot wire to fuel valve like I do on my VW's w /VE and expect
it to run?

This sounds like a poor connection on the fuel shut off solenoid. After some work, everytime I would step on the throttle or turn a corner, the truck would cut out and almost die, always just coming back in a nick of time.
Check those 2 wires on the solenoid. You might want to go ahead and replace or put a little extra crimp in those connectors as well. Since doing that, I have had no roblems (except when I forget to put them back on.

I had mine do that once the shut off solenoid wires rubbed on the bracket for the pump linkage and shorted out. It blew the fuse link in the wire harness on the fender.
I jumped it with a wire to the battery to get home.

thx for you help, I've checked and cleaned all the connections at the pump, as well as made a 'jumper wire' to use in emergency. I note a slight change in RPM when I disconnect 2 of the 3 leads to pump (when cold), I assume, it is an 'enrichment', or timing change for cold start. The 3rd wire, knocks it dead
Is the manual shut of on the fuel pump looking device below and to the rear of pump, there appears to be a lever in the horizontal position there
On to the service manual issue, I am suspecting a problem in fuse box, and don't have a owners manual, or service manual... Any recommendations? If anyone has a way to scan and send a labeled pic of fuse panel via fax (360-212-3873) or email, that would be great for a starter, I will go to eBay / amazon and look for a manual
BTW what is the P7100? is it a model # of the bosch VE?
thx,
janb

The P7100 in the 2nd gen pump. Capable of a lot more power than our VE's. But you have to change a bunch of stuff to convert our old rigs to that pump. Usually at least 2k to do it.
For about $25 you can go to www.alldata.com and get an online manual for a year.

The manual shutoff is on the driver's side of the injection pump. It looks like a "T". What you were looking at is the priming lever on the lift pump. That allows you to manually prime the engine after you change the filter or run out of fuel.
