92 w350 issues
I have a 92 w350flatbed auto , it runs great unloaded, but it is wanting to run a little hot while towing. I was pulling about 12-13,000 this morning and it got up to about 3rd line on the stock gauge. when I was going down hill the temperature went down. Also pulling hills was rather difficult I was running about 50-55 at the bottom and would go down to about 30-35 by the top. My questions are several. Is this normal? I have had the truck flushed and it seemed to do better than before. As to the transmisssion what can I do if anything to improve performance? The fluid has just been changed and it isn't burnt. I like this old truck but I would really like to be able to pull a little better. I have learned my lesson, the next towing truck I get will be a manual with as many gears as i can afford. Any advice would be appreciated.

Sounds normal for a stock truck. First thing is get a mechanical water temp gauge--the factory gauge and sender are about worthless. The difference between the marks on mine are about 2 degrees If you like the truck, spend the $$ on a built auto--the stocker is lackluster on a good day and does not put the power to the ground worth a darn. A built auto is big $$, but so is a new truck that comes with a bunch of other ?'s.

Tighter torque convertor, mechanical gauge (though i wouldnt worry about the third line- the FSM says you can go up to the 4th line without problems), and some pump tuning (which requires more gauges, but hey, it's still cheaper than a new(er) truck).
I'm actualy surprised a stock auto with a stock pump would pull that much weight that well.

you can convert that to a manuel transmission with a little time and know how and about 3500 dollars give or take if you shop for parts it could be a lot less. i did it on mine and that was the best thing i ever did.it was cheaper than another truck.
