92 W-250 with 518 stopped moving :(

The guy I sold my 92 to was driving along and about time it should have shifted into overdrive he heard a 'pop' and she stopped moving.
Pretty sure the xfer case, rear driveline and rear of the tranny are ok as in park the parking pawl still holds it.
Obviously we'll drop the tranny but wondered if anyone had a similiar experience and what they may have seen.
We are guessing it could well be torque converter, input shaft or maybe front pump but would appreciate any input.
Prior to it doing this the tranny was nice and tight but the truck has 250K on it and unknown service history so anything is possible.

Thanks,

Brian

You get any grating sounds? Flex plates are known to fail. And that leaves you with a no-go situation, and the parking pawl would still function.

That was the first thing I asked him and no it did not oh and it starts fine so if it is the flex plate it'd have to have broken in a manner that still left the ring gear connected to the crank.

Oh! You're right! Never thought about that.

Well, the input intermediate shafts are known to snap as well. The planetary on the intermediate shaft is aluminum as well and can strip out. I've seen pictures of this but can't remember where. But I think that would give you a "snap". I guess at this point I would guess one of the shafts. You could sort of verify this by doing some pressure tests at the various ports. If the input shaft is snapped before the pump, you'll get no pressure.

The pump is driven from the converter hub, not the input shaft. He could still show pressure with the input broken. The broken shaft just wouldn't let any power threw to turn the trans internal parts.
