92 Ram 250 Diesel, Auto Tansmission and Abs Problem
Hoping you guys with all your all of your knowledge could help me out. I have a'92 Ram 250 4x4 5.9L Diesel, auto transmission with O/D. Last week while stopped at a traffic light my brake pedal hardened up and my ABS and Park Brake light came on. Once I started moving it eased up and the light went off followed by a whistle sound. This continues at most stops now, and especially when I'm reversing. I also get the whistle sound when i shut the truck off. I figured the booster must need tobe replaced. 2 days ago i noticed a bit of slip in my transmission.. later that day I lost all transmission function. Once I shut the truck off and then restarted it I could drive for approx. 200' then it would disengage. I turned the truck off and restarted it and drove another few hundred feet until it would disengage again. My question is this.. any chance these 2 things are related.. possibly a vacuum problem.. or am I looking at a brake booster and having the transmission torn down? Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks boys!!

Your brake issue sounds like a vacuum leak. Could easily be the booster but check all the vacuum lines first.
As for the trans, is the fluid right up? Checked warm in N? Oil smell burnt? I had the same trans problem with my truck when the trans went, but I have the electronic controls. If you don't have any gears (ie slipping) then either the clutch packs are worn right down or they are not getting oil pressure. Not sure what would fail in the mechanical transmission to cause that outside of a worn out transmission pump. I'd say a blown piston seal, but it wouldn't move after a restart then either....
Maybe someone else can be a bit more insightful?

had a chevy do the same thing move a few hundred feet and quit. turned out to be clutch materiel clogging the pickup. after youd shut it off the clutch materiel wud drop off the pickup and you cud start and move a few hundred more feet

I would think it is 2 problems the brake issue is either a vacuum leak or a bad booster. The trans problem is probably debris clogging up the filter then when you shut it down it falls off the filter. Dont keep trying to move the truck like that cause it is starving for lubrication and you are gonna damage more stuff.

My truck is doing the exact same thing. Gets hard to press the brakes (no brake boost) and the idiot lights come on. Once under way (driving) lights go out, brakes return to normal. Come back down to idle, same thing. Figure it's either brake booster or vacuum leak. Cursory look under the hood, all lines securely attached. Difficult thing to do, replace the brake booster?
