89 overcharging
#4
I had a regulator go bad and it blew both headlights and popped the caps off the battery. Replaced just once and got lucky. Mine has the extra ground wire from alt to regulator also. You sure your gauge you are using is correct?

The good regulator part-number is in my "sig" below.
The wife's truck immediately blew both headlights and nearly boiled the Group-31S battery dry when the regulator went.
On account of her being in immediate need of her truck, I swiped a used one from another of our trucks, along with the headlights.
A couple weeks later, that regulator did just the opposite, no charge at all.
The shipment of special-order Mopars finally came in and ZERO problems since.
Also, with the Mopar regulator, we got rid of the constant "pulsing" of the lights at low RPM.
One interesting note = on the various Dodge forums that I frequent, I see lots of discussion on failed regulators, and when Dodge/Chrysler vehicles are discussed, I hear many die-hard Chrysler fans claim that they carry a couple extra regulators in the vehicle; whereas, I seldom, if ever, read/hear of a Ford regulator failing; the one in my Ford has been in there for more years than I can remember.
Maybe someone should do an install write-up on converting to the Ford style regulator and see how well that works behind the Dodge alternator.

I had this exact same problem on my '89. From my own experience, this idea may help you. I had an overcharging problem as well and replaced the voltage regulator (mounted on teh firewall, and the alternator) I also had to replcace the battery. Later I found out that my battery itself was causing the overcharging/not the proper model. Stay away from the deep cycle marine batteries. What battery are you using? 16V is too high, I charge at 13V or so. It was charging at 18V before.
