What would be involved in converting a 2wd d250 or d350 (say 1991 to 1993) into a w250 or w350 ?

Extremely difficult ?

Frame differences ?

Electrical issues ?

Estimated cost with or without a donor truck ?

Seems as though there are a greater number of really pristine D series trucks out there vs the 4wd versions.


Curious to see if anyone has done this.

Thoughts ?

Its been done. There's a write on it somewhere around here. I remember seeing one where they took part of the donor's frame and used it to drill the required holes.

One of these days I'm going to do this very thing you speak of to the crew cab I have.

This has been said many times It's easier then everyone think's all depends on how fast you work on it .

That was me. It was a royal PIA getting to some of the rivet heads. Remember you also have to remove the engine to do it properly. I've seen 1 where they cut and trimmed the 2WD engine crossmember. It took me by myself one complete day to remove the crossmembers, one morning to make the templates and get them bolted on in the correct locations and drill the new holes, and another big part of one day to bolt in the 4WD stuff. If it wasn't a clean crew cab frame I probably would not have considered doing it.

I did a 2wd ext cab to 4wd ext cab, auto to standard and lifted 4 inches at once, it was lot of hours i recomend to anyone to buy a 4x4 frame, it looks like its won't be a big deal but there are some diff in frames i have photos and info if someone is looking for ideas

Yes there is a small difference but nothing that will stop you if you have the tool's and the know how it's simple .

i just converted my 1982 crew cab long box 2wd frame into a 4wd frame useing a 1993 CTD 4x4 frame that was a wreck lol it wasnt hard some minor differences but nothing you cant work with i cut the 4x4 frame up into drilling templates and bolted them up to my 2wd frame then went drill crazy i had to weld up some old holes because they crossed over the new holes that had to be drilled and it worked great !!!!!

So you guys would say its not a smart choice to try and convert a 1991 D350 into a 4x4? I thought it would be a simple job of cutting off all the 2wd suspension components and adding the leaf spring perch in the front and drilling the holes for the mount in the back after properly measuring. Would the 2wd engine cross member not work? If not why?

It is a fairly easy job just a lot of rivet's to cut and pound out It took me 16 day's to convert mine but that was only a Sunday Job the 2 x cross member won't work because it hang's down to far plus you have to change the front cross brace where the front spring hanger's mount .

Ok, thanks simply. I am not apposed to cutting and bolting in new cross member and front brace. Just have to locate them

Yeah once you get the part's you will see how everything goes back in I would Convert a truck before I would Cut the frame and do it that way .but that's just Me.

This would be interested in the engine cross member and front spring perch cross beam but I think shipping would kill me.

It's gotta be a lot easier than my 2wd-V8 to cummins 4x4 swap for my motorhome.

I got's a 4x4 frame too. all good crossmembers on it.
