theres not a lot of electrical in these trucks thanks to it being a mechanical motor. lights, gauges, stereo, power to the starter and pump and thats pretty much it! Might be time consuming, but strip the interior down to nothing. take the dash and everything out, and just start over. get your basics, and worry about the rest later.

I think your best bet will be to surf Craigslist or similar websites for a cap that fits. Just so you know, a cap from a 73-87 Chevy, 80-96 Ford, or 72-93 Dodge should fit just fine. Later trucks than those listed have tapered beds (cab end of bed is wider than tailgate end) so they won't fit our trucks properly. The caps made specifically for Ford's tend to be sloped more at the cab than caps meant for Chevy's or Dodge's, but should fit reasonably well, assuming they don't rub at the top of the cab. For the years of trucks I listed, the Big Three long beds were very similar in dimensions. Hope that helps.
Edit: I added a picture of my truck. It has an aluminum cap that came off another 1st Gen, but I have no idea if it was meant for a 1st Gen originally. It is pretty close to the cargo light (about 1/2" clearance) but it hasn't been a problem yet.

Rick, I did contact home office AND local dealers with A.R.E, Leer, Century, and several others. No one has the mold to make the Dodge Gen I cap anymore. But I did NOT look into Chevy or Ford for the years SChandler mentioned; I WILL be doing that this spring.
I could still go with a cover of some kind, but if I pick up a retriever over the next couple of years, It would be tough to get a dog box under a bed cover. Besides a topper/cap, looking to swap to Gen 2 40/20/40 front seat (or Chevy), and put a 4" suspension lift on this truck.
You guys have me kicking myself also; I ran across a '92 Diesel long bed ext cab last year, with 220000 miles. The body and cab were fairly rough, but it would have made a great project. I won't make that mistake again, after seeing what many of you have done.

I've got just the ticket for you. You'd have to put some cash up, but you'd be coming out ahead in the end. Ive got a parts truck with manual doors, mirrors etc, you could swap the doors over and solve that issue. the heater core in it still works perfect, fixed that issue, Gauges all work good etc. The lighting system and relays and crap would all work the same. you could steal all that out of it. The only difference is its a gas truck, so you'd just have to worry about redoing your starting/charging system, which again with the cummins is super simple to redo. Then you'd still have a ton of left over parts to scrap out/sell. The motor/trans in it is worth 1000 bucks alone. the scrap metal is worth a few hundred, axles are worth a few hundred etc. Point is, i only want a grand for the truck, you could rob all the parts you need, and sell the motor trans, and scrap the rest and get your 1000 bucks back. your trucks 90% fixed for free with nothing but some labor, and your back on the road!

93 5sp, wood hauler/plow truck, 37 goodyears, beadlocks
Pic with the wood, turbo went out, alt quit, shredded a tire, still made it home but there were definitely no mosquitoes around with no turbo!

I pulled it outta a frito lay truck a couple days prior. I havent decided what to put it in yet. Either my toyota truck or my 87 W150.
I had a 3.3 cummins in the works first for the toy, but he guy backed out.
