1st gen 6speed conversion
i gotta pull the nv5600 out to replace the clutch, I went ahead and got another drive coupler so as to get it machined for the rear seal in the back of the tranny. when I did the conversion 6 or 7 years ago, I was in too big of a hurry and just pulled the seal and gooped a non hardening sealer between the tranny and transfer case. It's been slowly dripping ever since then so I want to run the rear seal. Problem is the size to machine to I have read on the internet articles is 1.940" and dodge and napa nv5600 seals they are selling call for 1.625" shaft size. I think the chryco book is wrong and napa just lifted the data off chryco when compiling their book. Anybody got the actual rear seal # for the 4x4 nv5600?

The standard NV4500/5600 4x4 rear seal is a Timken or National 710058. The Timken books lists that being:
710058
1.938" shaft
2.562" bore
2.566" O.D.
0.317" width
Just to be difficult I went through the seal book and got a seal to fit the coupler as-is, it ended up being a metric seal:
546508XX
2.126" shaft (54mm)
2.559" bore (65mm)
2.567" O.D. (65.2mm)
0.315" width (8mm)
My coupler measured 2.127 with my cheapy caliper. I plan to polish it up and try it. No lathe work required. The metric seal is rubber encased, so I am assuming it will fit into the rear housing. I do not have the seal in my possesion yet though, so it is still speculation at this point.
Now, I have thought of one other catch.... What about the splines between the coupler and the transmission mainshaft. How do you seal that?

Thank you sir, exactly the data I was needing. I like your idea of larger seal, off to bearings inc today to investigate, part #s in hand. Sometimes there are inserts available to slide into coupler to prevent seepage, gonna look into that also, if not, a little judicious application of silicone might do the job. The gear oil for that tranny is expensive.

Whatever came of this?
Specifically, in the 21 months since this thread was active has anyone used the Timken 546508XX seal?
I'm currently doing a swap and after three days of research, comparing part numbers, and checking compatabilities, came to the same conclusion as CaptainChrysler. The Timken 546508XX seal can be used with the stock coupler. It was pure dumb luck that I just stumbled onto this thread in a Google search.
I'd really like to use the Timken seal and NOT have to machine the coupler down to use the 710058 seal.
Or is there another seal option for using the drive coupler in stock form?
Thanks. Resbum
